Nostalgia isn't what its cracked up to be. Anyone who grew up with a book or screen in their life is tempted to look back at the works that defined their childhood, trying to capture the feelings that they got from experiencing those works for the first time. But what if the cartoons that young fans used to escape their problems had even bigger dangers lurking under the surface? In the new weekly series Funny Creek, a young girl named Lilly learns that even escaping the world doesn't mean getting away from your feelings. heck out the preview pages for the upcoming issue 2 below.
Funny Creek is written by Rafael Albuquerque, co-creator of the series American Vampire and Huck, alongside Hit-Girl's Rafael Scavone. Eduardo Medeiros (Gotham Academy, Mercy Sparx) is the series artist, with color artist Priscilla Tramontano (Transformers: Robots In Disguise, Sonic the Hedgehog) and lettering by Bernardo Brice (Adora and the Distance). The series is published by Stout Club Entertainment in cooperation with the ComiXology Originals digital comics platform.
The story is about Lilly, a clever but troubled young girl in the 1980s who experiences a tragedy at home. As she runs from her problems, a head-on collision lands her in The Funny Creek Show, the setting of her favorite TV cartoon. She meets Sherriff Clumsy, the show's protagonist, and discovers that the whimsical animated world she entered is much darker up close. In issue 2, Lilly's colorful drama continues as she faces off with the sinister villains of Funny Creek Town. According to the preview text, the fight has a lasting impact on Lilly's journey in The Funny Creek Show, which draws her further into the dark adventures that Sheriff Clumsy's world has in store for her. The preview kicks off the issue with a flashback to a Halloween costume contest, giving us insight into the events that made Lilly who she is, as well as the turmoil that created the grief that propelled her into the alternate reality of the cartoon.
Funny Creek is an original story that blends together the 80s-era childhood angst and cultural aesthetics of Stranger Things and Paper Girls with the kind of deep emotional conflict played out against cartoon foils that fans of Happy and I Kill Giants might recognize. The main character has a lot to tangle with regarding themes of grief and loss... and those are bigger problems than any fictional clown can solve.
Funny Creek #2 will be available from ComiXology on August 11, 2020. The first issue is available now.
