No Joke! 'The Simpsons' Send A Love Letter To Cincinnati - WVXU

cucun.indah.link

Has Cincinnati ever looked better on national TV than on The Simpsons Sunday?

The riverfront and iconic Roebling Suspension bridge… A flying pig statue at The Banks… Skyline Chili at Clifton and Ludlow?

And the WKRP In Cincinnati music during the credit roll?

The Simpsons, which can be brutally savage in its satire, sent a love letter to the Queen City in Sunday's episode, "The Road To Cincinnati." (Spoiler alert! Every word of this story is a spoiler. If you didn't see Sunday's episode, I've put the video at the end of this story.)

None of the Simpsons family members actually visited Cincinnati. The plot featured Springfield Elementary School Principal Seymour Skinner and his boss, Springfield Schools Superintendent Gary Chalmers, driving 800 miles to Cincinnati to attend "Edu-Con," a convention for "non-teaching administrators" at the Duke Energy Convention Center. Chalmers speech would be in the convention center's "Procter & Gamble room."

Nerdy Skinner was selected for the trip after Finch, principal at Springfield's "magnet school for gifted test takers" falls ill. Finch had promised he'd take Chalmers to a Cincinnati restaurant owned by his buddy, a former long snapper for the Bengals.

Skinner and Chalmers drive because they're kicked off an Air Cincinnati flight after Chalmers' panic attack. No other planes fly to Cincinnati "since the demise of Cincinnairy," Skinner explains. Most of the half-hour was about their tumultuous travels, during which Skinner reads about Cincinnati chili choices from a guide book called The Lonely Person's Guide To Cincinnati.

The trip was worth it. When they reach their destination in the final five minutes, The Simpsons broadcast a breathtakingly detailed cartoon version of Cincinnati's riverfront, with the Suspension Bridge, barge, B.B. Riverboat, The Banks, Great American Ball Park, Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, Heritage Bank Arena, One Lytle Place, the I-471 "Big Mac" bridge and the twin Procter & Gamble towers.

Next came a close-up of a flying pig statue holding a Pete Rose joke, and a generic downtown convention center.

After Chalmers' convention speech, he and Skinner are shown eating chili in the Clifton Skyline window seats. The views pulls out to show distinctive C-H-I-L- I sign, gas lights and red brick buildings on the Clifton streetscape.

The writers even slipped a P&G punchline into the subplot for the Simpsons family. While Skinner and Chalmers are away, they attend a performance by a three-person Improv Shakespeare troupe. When they ask for audience suggestions, Marge shouts, "Washing machine!"

And the actress says, "Out damn stain! For there's a Tide pod in the affairs of laundry."

It ends with the closing WKRP theme and gibberish lyrics playing under the voice credits.

What a trip! Well done!

Defendant: request for sex was joke - Southwest Times

By MELINDA WILLIAMS

A 31-year-old Hiwassee man granted bond last week says he was just joking when he requested sex from a minor in October.

Matthew Ray Chrisley is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and criminal solicitation of a crime against nature. He was arrested in October and was held without bond until being granted a $20,000 secured bond Wednesday.

During the bond hearing, Chrisley’s father, Clarence, testified he would ensure no contact between his son and the alleged victim if bond were granted. He offered to post his home and land to secure the bond.

Based on his own investigation of what happened, Clarence said he believes Matthew made improper comments to the 17-year-old female, but nothing serious occurred between the two. The incident was described during court proceedings as being a joke that went awry.

Clarence told the court Matthew can live with his father, Clarence Sr., if released on bond. On cross-examination by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Travis Epes, Clarence acknowledged the senior Chrisley was convicted in Pulaski County in 2014 of aggravated sexual battery against the same complaining witness, who was 7 or 8 years old at the time of that offense.

If I'm ever in trouble, I want Haley as my lawyer.

🚨SPOILER ALERT: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE UNDOING LIE AHEAD🚨

In case you missed it, HBO premiered a limited series a few weeks ago called The Undoing and, needless to say, it's left a lot of us quite undone.

No, Travis. You were not.

The Undoing follows Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman) through all the trials and tribulations that come with her husband Jonathan (Hugh Grant) going on trial for the murder of one of the mothers at their son's school — who also happens to be Jonathan's ~secret lover~.

HBO

Donald Sutherland, Noah Jupe, Édgar Ramírez, Lily Rabe, and Noma Dumezweni round out this stacked cast.

After biting our nails for over a month, the finale aired last night and our questions were finally ANSWERED! And, because we live in this day and age, the internet rushed to their keyboards to share their thoughts and feelings.

Here are some of the funniest tweets:

Saved By The Bell Apologises To Selena Gomez Over Kidney Transplant Jokes - Tyla

cucun.indah.link

Peacock, the streaming platform owned by NBC, has apologised for using the Ice Cream singer's health as the butt of a joke after widespread criticism on social media.

You can watch a clip of the jokes below:

According to The Wrap, the broadcaster explained it was "never our intention to make light" of the transplant.

"We apologise. It was never our intention to make light of Selena's health. We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC," they told the publication.

It comes after fans demanded "respect" for Selena's health condition recently, as the reboot aired a series of jokes about it.

The gags are part of a scene in the sixth episode of the show, where the students at Bayside High School have their phones confiscated, and proceed to chat about pop culture - because, you know, what else do teenagers do when they're bored AF?

As the show goes on, the celeb chat turns nasty, as two of the teens begin to argue in the hallway about who donated a kidney to Gomez back in 2017.

One of them thinks the donor was her ex Justin Bieber's mother, while the other claims it was fellow tween icon, Demi Lovato. (As it turns out, they're both wrong. It was actually her friend, Francia Raisa).

Later in the episode, a piece of graffiti can be seen, which reads: "Does Selena Gomez even have kidneys?"

The scenes come two years after she told fans she had been diagnosed with autoimmune disease, lupus, and spoken very candidly about her struggles.

And taking to social media, Selena's fans jumped fiercely to her defence after the scenes aired. Plus, amongst the fury, the hashtag #RESPECTSELENAGOMEZ also started trending on Twitter.

"Not Ok SBTB. People die from Lupus complications. @selenagomez has to deal with enough and doesn't need your ignorant jokes at the expense of her health. Shame on your writers, producers, and actors who thought this was ok. #respectselenagomez #lupus #kidneytransplant," one wrote.

While another penned: "Why is the Saved By the Bell reboot ... using Selena Gomez's health problems as a joke?"

A third chipped in: "It's the disrespect for me. When did it become comical to make fun of ANYONE w/ an autoimmune disease that required life-saving surgery? F*ck that you Great Value brand 'Saved By The Bell'. #SelenaGomez".

As Twitter blew up, Selena's donor, Francia Raisa wrote: "As a kidney donor I want to show love and let other donors know that you are not alone. You are seen. You are appreciated.

"You are so brave and your selfless act is very much appreciated and valued."

She added: "Appreciate the apology but let's not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall".

COVID Patient, 23, Suffers Mini Stroke, Warns Coronavirus 'No Joke' - Newsweek

cucun.indah.link

An Arizona athlete's plea for people to take COVID-19 seriously has gone viral after he suffered a "mini-stroke" related to his virus diagnosis.

Riley Behrens, 23, has been documenting his experience on social media since testing positive on November 25, stressing he had been healthy before contracting the disease and was largely adhering to social distancing and face covering guidelines.

Initially, Behrens said symptoms were mild and he was only experiencing "occasional headaches and on/off chest tightness." That soon changed. Within three days, he was admitted to hospital after having trouble breathing, dizziness and vision loss.

"COVID-19 is no joke. It's a life-threatening virus that affects everyone so differently that there's no way to predict how your body will respond," Behrens warned.

In a Twitter thread that has now attracted more than 21,000 shares and 1,300 replies, Behrens said he had been diagnosed as having a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), which is described by the Mayo Clinic as a brief period of symptoms similar to a stroke.

Such an attack is caused by a clot that blocks blood supply to a part of the brain, and while they do not result in permanent damage it can be a warning sign.

"About one in three people who has a transient ischemic attack will eventually have a stroke, with about half occurring within a year after the transient ischemic attack," the U.S. non-profit medical center explains in a fact-sheet on its website.

Behrens said in the thread he had likely caught the respiratory disease from a person he came into contact with, who was at a wedding he did not personally attend.

He said before COVID he could play an 80-minute rugby game with mild-to-moderate exhaustion, but now gets "short of breath just walking down the hall." According to Behrens, doctors have said his sporting abilities may never be the same.

"I'm being told I will likely never return to contact sports because of lasting lung and brain damage. The risk for a second stroke will always be there, and another head injury could be fatal," he wrote in the Twitter thread on Sunday.

"My recovery will involve weeks, if not months of both physical and occupational therapy as well as continuous follow-up with my neurologist to determine lasting effects and damage. This is not what anyone should have to go through."

Behrens told Newsweek today that he remains "very weak and dizzy" when moving and said walking in a straight line remains difficult due to the disorientation.

He said the response to the Twitter thread had been "incredible" and that it was initially intended as a way to urge people in his inner circle to "wake up and pay attention."

"It's not a joke, despite what many think. I will likely never play sports again and I grew up an athlete. That's by far the most devastating part of this. The rest can be worked on, walking, grip strength, etc., but sports were everything to me," he told Newsweek.

On its website, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reiterated its health advice as cases, hospitalizations and deaths surge across the country.

The agency advisory says: "As cold weather moves in, people spend more time indoors and the holidays approach, take steps to slow the spread of COVID-19.

It added: "Wear a mask, stay at least six feet apart, avoid crowds, and wash your hands often. The more steps you take, the more you are protected against COVID-19."

The U.S. has the most COVID cases in the world, so far recording more than 13 million infections and over 260,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The state of Arizona has logged 325,995 cases and 6,634 deaths at time of writing.

Ultimately, Behrens urged everyone to follow health advice. "I never thought that I would be affected this way, but here we are," he tweeted. "Don't let yourself be next."

The coronavirus has turned the NFL into a joke, and nobody should be laughing - The Washington Post

cucun.indah.link

The complications were absurd, the stuff of satire. But everything is dark humor in the context of a pandemic that has killed more than 266,000 Americans. On a November afternoon programmed for football, it’s understandable to get lost in tradition and consider the NFL’s difficulty containing the virus to be inevitable follies. It’s understandable to keep finding reason to support plowing ahead, because the sport has made it to Week 12 with no cancellations and a surprisingly manageable number of schedule adjustments. However, all is neither well nor under control in the NFL.

While it is unlikely that Commissioner Roger Goodell will publicly acknowledge any danger, he needs to make sure the league has several firm contingency plans in place. The coronavirus is in charge, and it is raging once again. So let’s keep saying it: It’s impossible to play football out in the open, without a bubble environment, and not be significantly affected. Some teams have been negligent and sloppy about health protocols, and the NFL has grown less compassionate and more forceful in disciplining them. But the reality is that the league can’t mandate its way out of trouble, not entirely.

It can’t entertain its way out of trouble, either. It needs a better plan, even though the original one was well conceived and helped the sport make it through three quarters of the regular season. The NFL can’t afford to be bullheaded, rigid and overconfident. It should be leery of sticking to a script when the opponent is so viciously adaptable.

In ordinary times, the NFL doesn’t have to be flexible. It is so inflexible that people marvel over some of the bending it has done so far. But it’s going to have to be more limber. The next two months will test the league more than anything it has experienced in 2020. At stake is the most important part of the season.

The struggles of Week 12 could stand as a watershed moment for this season. The message should be clear: The coronavirus is laughing at the NFL’s attempt at resistance. The coronavirus is the stout defensive line that the league can’t move. Every future attempt at a direct attack will prove futile. It’s time for some clever strategy.

Hub cities and bubbles must be under consideration, especially during the playoffs. After the fiasco in the Broncos’ quarterback room, fresh strategies on how to distance position groups must be encouraged. The NFL needs to ensure that every team has a plan in case other municipalities decide to ban contact sports for a time.

And perhaps most important is being willing to adjust the schedule and revisit the league’s strong desire to finish on time. I hate predictions, but I’m going to give you one: Without a bubble, the Super Bowl will not be played Feb. 7. If for some reason it is, the roster circumstances surrounding it will de-legitimize the outcome. The winner will be the most asterisk-worthy champion of this wretched period.

If the NFL is willing to be flexible, it has enough wiggle room to prevent that from happening. It doesn’t matter if the playoffs start later than planned. It doesn’t matter if the Super Bowl is on Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 or even March 7. With the limits on fans, it doesn’t even matter if it is held in Tampa (the league can always give the city a future one) or any other available city. It just matters that it happens without compromising the integrity of the result.

Other pro sports leagues have concluded in bubbles to control some of the unknowns, to make sure their championships aren’t influenced by coronavirus attrition. LeBron James was healthy and on his game. So were Corey Seager, Breanna Stewart and Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman. The last thing the NFL needs is for the Super Bowl, or any key playoff game, to be decided because Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers tested positive.

This is different from a random knee injury ruining a team’s hopes. The NFL knows the coronavirus is a problem and has spent the entire year planning to circumvent it. If it factors into the playoffs, it would be an embarrassment for the entire league.

On the playground of sports, absurdity can be entertaining. Sometimes, absurdity is the best part, to be honest, because it allows authentic human reaction to mix with a sort of inconsequential ridiculousness that provides complication only in the moment and matters only on the field of play. Drama couldn’t pick a more ideal setting.

But sports aren’t safely in their playful vacuum right now. Pandemic absurdity is dangerous. Maybe well-conditioned athletes who are tested daily are less at risk of dying from covid-19 complications. But there’s still much to learn about the long-term effects of this virus. And as the Ravens have reminded us, the threat of a widespread outbreak within a team is a havoc-wreaking experience for the whole league. There are many ways the virus can create competitive disadvantages, and watching the Broncos try to complete a pass with Kendall Hinton, a practice squad wide receiver, at quarterback is only a small window into such chaos.

The NFL can be accused of many things. It is known as a cold and callous business. On Sunday, it felt like we should add another word to the alliteration, one that offers a stern warning: clownish.

And there’s nothing funny about that.
