Best presidential debate meme: How Trump-Biden showdown was worst thing ever - CNET

This story is part of Elections 2020, CNET's coverage of the run-up to voting in November.

Americans from across the political spectrum seem to agree: Tuesday night's chaotic presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden was an excruciating disaster. But where does it rank on the list of really, really bad things, say, like The Star Wars Holiday Special?

Spoiler: It was worse.

In a meme that took off after the 90 minutes of screaming, interrupting and insults ended, celebrities and others began posting comparisons of what horrible things in their lives they'd now rank better than the debate.

Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, appeared in the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, which featured singing Wookiees wearing Snuggies and a Jefferson Starship hologram jam band, yet he declared that the debate was worse.

As of Wednesday morning, Hamill's tweet declaring "that debate was the worst thing I've ever seen & I was in The Star Wars Holiday Special" has been liked more than 679,000 times and retweeted 101,000 times.

Hamill wasn't alone. Others users chimed in, claiming the debate was worse than terrible events in their own pasts.

"That was the worst thing I've ever seen, and I wrote Fantastic Four," tweeted writer-producer Jeremy Slater.

"It was the worst thing I have ever experienced and I made out with a duck," wrote Howard the Duck star Lea Thompson.

Others joined in, including Justin Marks, who wrote the much-criticized 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

And even those of us who never made a film could find a painful comparison. "That was the worst thing I've seen and I played E.T. on the Atari 2600 as a kid," wrote one Twitter user.

As you can see from our roundups of memes from Tuesday night, the debate has also been compared with a Real Housewives reunion and "a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck." Start combing your past for more bad things. Another presidential debate is set for Oct. 15.

There's Nothing Funny about Donald Trump - Paste - Paste Magazine

cucun.indah.link

A big orange baby. Cheeto-in-Chief. The concept of overly pursed lips. You give a thousand comedians a thousand laptops and this is what you get. But it’s not comedy’s fault Donald Trump isn’t funny. He hasn’t been funny in four years and our constant need to squeeze humor from this nightmare has proved exhausting and futile. Trust me when I say I absolutely do not want to hear another Trump joke.

Despite what everyone’s most annoying coworker told us, we knew Trump was actually bad for comedy. Lord knows that has not stopped anyone from trying though. With the president in the news every day, the need to mock him follows. The problem is supply is meeting demand a little too well. There’s no more gold to mine.

Unlike most political candidates, we knew Donald Trump as a punchline and a civilian well before his campaign. He was an easy, go-to impression like Christopher Walken or JFK. And like Walken, there’s nothing fresh about a new Trump impression. He’s a hacky subject.

Part of the problem is that Trump comedy is mainstream, which doesn’t inherently make it subpar, but like many things, the over commodification of mainstream ideas often leads to a flattening of content. The product becomes overly broad and gutless in favor of being more accessible. Instead of speaking truth to power, it’s about speaking to Dave in Branson, Missouri.

Again, we’ve always known Trump as a joke, but he also held the unique position of being someone frequently let in on the joke. His Comedy Central Roast was an invitation to laugh with us. His hosting gig on SNL was an invitation into the cool kids’ club alongside Tom Hanks, Melissa McCarthy, and Alec Baldwin, the very man who would erroneously win an Emmy impersonating him. His inclusion in such iconic comedic institutions renders the later mockery fruitless. If you let him in the club you can’t suddenly kick him out and think your comedy can serve as an effective dagger into the heart of his appeal. What leg do you have to stand on after you let him sit on your couch?

Some of this content doesn’t even bother to transform his garbage into something new. The Tik Tok trend of creating content around unedited soundbites of Trump, popularised by comedian Sarah Cooper, has proven to be very popular but ultimately it’s all an empty offering. These videos take his words verbatim as users lip sync along, sprinkling in some crazy eyes and cringy smiles and calling it a day. That’s not an impression, that’s fascist karaoke.

The actual impressions we’ve been subjected to have become devoid of standards. You don’t need nuance or an uncanny vocal inflection anymore, you just need a frizzy wig, too much bronzer, and to purse your lips like you’re trying to expel them from your face. Baldwin’s Emmy is about as pure an example of giving a trophy to the most famous face in the room there ever was as his big head is about all that brings him close to a likeness of Trump. Unlike Darrell Hammond’s rudimentary impression, there was a silliness to the simpleness, but he also satirized almost a completely different person. He impersonated a version of Trump better known by his weirdest traits instead of his ugliest. And that’s a big issue; we know too much about him to accept such a narrow and sanitized portrait of the man today.

A Trump impression has to be spot-on to work or else it feels lifeless and wasteful at best and tasteless and tone-deaf at worst. Even Anthony Atamanuik’s Trump, the definitive portrayal, lost all appeal after the election (save for his truck bit from The President Show). Part of what made Antamanuik and James Adomian’s cross-country Trump vs Bernie show so entertaining was that Trump’s words, while real, were perceived by most (in hindsight, naively) as no more than a ridiculous stunt from a powerless individual, a political wannabe that will be neutralized if we do the right thing on election day. But that hope waned and both the parody and real campaigns went on. Even Atamanuik seemed to sense some direness during a live show in Atlanta I attended. After feeling tension from the audience after comparing Trump’s rhetoric to Nazism, he somewhat broke character to address the audience. Still with his patented Trump affectation in his voice, the comedian warned the audience clearly as himself that if these words are disturbing then the fact the real Trump is saying them should worry us more.

For many people, election night 2016 flipped a switch. Whether you woke up that day morbidly firm in your prediction for how the night would end or desperately hanging on to a shred of optimism, this shit suddenly became real. Suddenly, Trump stopped being funny.

Was he ever funny? No, not really. Yes, his hair is dumb. Yes, he sits weird and wears suits two sizes too big, but that’s surface level. He’s always been awful, but so are a lot of things we joke about (9/11, Hitler, cancer, etc.). But a joke is not inherently entertaining or useful just by being a joke. Comedy requires context and the context accompanying Trump jokes often nullifies their impact.

Since the election, new Trump jokes are dead on arrival, each feeling overdone as soon as they’re spoken. You can’t satirize a man who’s self-parodying, and it’s impossible to overlook the atrocities he’s inflicted upon this country in dazzling stupid fashion in favor of a laugh. It’s not that comedy is not wanted or needed during this time, but that it’s hard to be in the headspace for the subject matter anymore. It’s airplane humor being sold to plane crash survivors on day 1,386 on the deserted island.

So why is there such a demand for Trump jokes?

We know why we seek out comedy in general: To laugh, to escape, to try to make sense of the world around us. The weight of Trump’s presidency creates a constant demand for all three. People seem desperate for Trump content in the same vein we stubbornly need to refer to him as 45 instead of “President Trump,” because we refuse to validate his administration.

I see a desire for these Tik Tok videos in 2020 the same way I latched onto John Oliver’s uncharacteristically toothless Make Donald Drumpf Again segment in 2016. It wasn’t good commentary or punditry at the time either but we ate it up, sharing it far and wide in desperate hopes people that might follow us would see how ridiculous of a candidate he was. It wasn’t quality, but if people can be blinded by trivial pro-Trump bullshit, maybe you can be fixed by righteous bullshit. When the emperor has no clothes, you’ll grasp at any flimsy straw you find to try to restore some common sense.

We are so inundated with Trump content, news and comedy, that you really have to rise above the noise in order to break out. It rarely happens, and at this point, I don’t care if it ever does. No matter the style or the mouthpiece, it all falls on deaf ears.

“Can you believe he said, ‘Person. Woman. Man. TV. Camera.?’ “ YES. Yes I can. There are kids in cages and white supremacist militias patrolling cities. It’s extremely believable whenever Trump does anything stupid, malicious, or downright inexplicable. Did he try to look at a solar eclipse? Of course he did, what else would you expect?

It’s not that I can’t juggle two ideas at once, but the notion that anyone can be surprised by any soundbite after saying Mexicans are rapists, after mocking a reporter’s disability, is baffling. Who cares if he mispronounces Yosemite? We’re turning weeks long jokes and resistance merch to hock out of something that would trend for less than three hours if Kanye said it.

I’m so tired. I’m so exhausted. Each bombshell feels more like a fallen acorn. Not because it doesn’t matter, but because it doesn’t seem to work as a weapon against him, neither as fact nor fodder for jokes.

If tragedy plus time equals comedy, then it’s going to be a long time before any Trump jokes can pack a punch again. Trump is a tragedy but one we haven’t had any space from yet. The storm still rages and a new wound opens every day. Desperately trying to wring comedy from such an evil man is like trying to tell knock knock jokes while the Titanic’s going down. I have no interest or patience for your “zany” sketch while mid-drowning in frozen waters, and I cringe just thinking about the first way-too-soon Vice-esque movie we’ll get about this.

Nothing about Trump is funny. Nothing about him can be funny. Stop trying to force it.

Funniest Debate Tweets - Paste - Paste Magazine

It’s hard to laugh about a debate where the sitting president refuses to disavow white supremacists, repeatedly lies throughout, and encourages his supporters to “watch” polling place, but what else could anybody expect from Trump? Tonight’s debate was an absolute disaster, with Trump bloviating like an abuser trying to break his victim, and moderator Chris Wallace catastrophically failing at his job. If you somehow still had any hope for America, maybe these 90 minutes finally smartened you up.

Still, though, despite being an utter black hole of comedy, hope, optimism, and anything else remotely positive, this debate couldn’t go untweeted. I’m going to take a page from our president and confidently state, with absolutely no evidence or research whatsoever, that over 90% of tweets sent between 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET were about the debate. The vast majority of them were prosaic or generic or repetitive or even downright terrible. A small select few were legitimately funny, though, and those are the ones gathered here below. Relive the latest embarrassment to befall our failing democracy, now in convenient tweet form, and make sure you follow all the people who wrote ‘em. And get ready for further indignities when the next debate happens next week.

Indians troll Yankees over infamous bug-infested playoff game - FanSided

cucun.indah.link

The Cleveland Indians’ social media team took the opportunity on Tuesday to remind the Yankees of the bugs that can infest Progressive Field.

No postseason series between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians can go on without mentioning a game that has gone down in baseball lore simply as the “Bug Game.”

Thirteen years ago, in the second game of their ALDS matchup at Progressive Field in Cleveland, the powerful Yankees, led by Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, were looking to even the series against the Indians. They took a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning with rookie Joba Chamberlain, who had surrendered just one earned run all season, on the mound.

Then the bugs came.

The midges that live in Lake Erie thrive in hot, humid weather. The temperature at first pitch back in 2007 was a balmy 81 degrees. They usually come out 45 minutes after twilight; with a start time of 5:09 p.m, it perfectly coincided with the eighth inning.

Chamberlain was swarmed as the desperate Yankees tried to swat the bugs away. They even resorted to a can of bug spray. But the bugs had done their damage to Chamberlain’s psyche, and he allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning. The Indians would go on to win the game in the bottom of the 11th and take the series in four games, Joe Torre’s last game as Yankees manager.

The Cleveland Indians had to bring up the bug game

It was a night no one who was there will ever forget, and whoever runs the Indians’ social media channels hasn’t forgotten either. Shortly before the Yankees and Indians began their best-of-three Wild Card series on Tuesday in Cleveland, the Indians posted a picture of a midge on the glass window of the press box. “Welcome back, old friend,” the post reads.

There is no danger of a repeat of the bugs today. The temperature in Cleveland is only 61 degrees. The Yankees have already scored more runs than they did on that October night 13 years ago, getting two off Shane Bieber with an Aaron Judge home run in the first inning.

Calling the game for ESPN is Rodriguez, who played third base for the Yankees in 2007. “I still see bugs in my sleep,” he said.

The bugs aren’t there in 2020, but, even after 13 years, they are far from forgotten.

Joe Biden releases 2019 tax returns to troll Trump ahead of debate - Washington Times

cucun.indah.link

Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden released his 2019 tax returns on Tuesday hours before the first presidential debate, painting a sharp contrast with President Trump’s finances and obligations.

The Biden campaign said the American people deserve to know where both candidates stand financially.

“This is a historic level of transparency meant to give the American people faith once again that their leaders will look out for them and not their own bottom line,” said Biden deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield.

Mr. Biden released his 2019 returns days after The New York Times reported that Mr. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 and that the president appears to be responsible for loans totaling more than $400 million, most of which come due in the next several years.

Mr. Biden and Jill Biden, his wife, reported an adjusted gross income of $985,233 in 2019, pocketing about $500,000 in paychecks and the rest from retirement, investment income and businesses set up for book sales and speaking fees.

They paid about $300,000 in income taxes, a roughly 30% tax rate.

Mr. Biden reported $135,116 in salary from the University of Pennsylvania — he went on unpaid leave in April 2019 — and some five- and six-figure speaking fees on a financial disclosure form he filed earlier this year.

Mrs. Biden teaches at Northern Virginia Community College.

Mr. Biden said the new disclosure means he has released 22 years’ worth of his tax returns throughout his lengthy career in the public eye.

The Biden campaign also released the 2019 returns for running mate Sen. Kamala D. Harris and Doug Emhoff, her husband, on Tuesday.

The couple reported an adjusted gross income of just over $3 million in 2019 and paid more than $1 million in taxes.

Mr. Emhoff is currently on leave from his job with the law firm DLA Piper.

The disclosures were directed squarely at Mr. Trump, who has broken with decades of precedent for major-party presidential nominees in declining to release any of his tax returns, citing an ongoing IRS audit.

Mr. Trump and his team also dismissed The New York Times report as a last-minute smear job intended to give Mr. Biden a boost ahead of the debate.

“The president has paid tens of millions of dollars in taxes in the decade leading up to him declaring his candidacy and millions after,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Fox News.

Rep. Kevin Brady, the top Republican on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, called for an investigation of the paper’s source to see if any laws were broken.

“While many critics question the article’s accuracy, equally troubling is the prospect that a felony crime was committed by releasing the private tax return information of an individual — in this case, the president’s,” said Mr. Brady, Texas Republican.

The paper said it obtained the tax data from sources with legal access to the information.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, a New Jersey Democrat at the forefront of the fight to get Mr. Trump’s tax returns, said the report confirms “some of our worst fears.”

“Trump’s titanic financial losses confirm that while he campaigned as a so-called brilliant financial wizard, Trump is a cheat, a fraud, and perhaps the worst businessman in the world,” Mr. Pascrell said.

Archer: The 5 Best Returning Recurring Jokes In Season 11 | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

cucun.indah.link

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for the first three episodes of Archer Season 11, now airing on FXX.

The return of Archer in Season 11 is also the return of the "modern day" post-coma life of the World's Greatest Spy. While the previous three seasons had their own style and tried to bring in some of the recurring jokes of the previous seasons, there were some that they were unable to do. Luckily, Season 11 reintroduces many of the recurring jokes that stuck with audiences, including these five.

Lana, Lana, Lanaaaaaaaaa

One of the funniest recurring jokes is when Sterling Archer tries to get Lana Kane's attention by repeating her name twice, followed by a long winded scream of her name, which goes uninterrupted until she answers him. This joke was not possible due to the relationships in Dreamland, Danger Island or 1999, but Season 11 brings this joke back with a little twist. In Season 11, Episode 3, "Helping Hands," it's Lana who takes the reins of this joke and turns it onto Sterling with an, "Archer, Archer, Archerrrrrrrr." This is a refreshing revamp of the joke that made audiences giddy to hear once more.

Cyril Figgis' Suppressing Fire

When Cyril Figgis first became a field agent, he was scared of everything around him. He was not a man made for the field, so instead of being stealthy, he would stand with his eyes closed and gun at the ready, clearing the ammunition while screaming his battle cry, "suppressing fire." While he tried, he never hit a target.  In Season 11, Episode 1, "The Orpheus Gambit," another twist is taken to this recurring joke when Cyril, now a tactical lead on missions, orders Archer to lay some cover fire while the team spreads out. Much to Sterling's annoyance, he stands up and copies his coworker's battle cry, screaming "suppressing fire" as he shoots around like a mad man.

You Blew Up Krieger's Van

This joke shockingly became a recurring one due to it being more of a reference to Planet of the Apes than it being one bred from the minds of the writers, featuring Krieger falling to his knees and pounding the ground while crying out, "You blew it up!" This has become one of the funniest recurring jokes, mainly due to Lucky Yates (Krieger's voice actor) delivering it with such enthusiasm and veracity. This joke made its comeback in Season 11, Episode 3, "Helping Hands" and was combined with another recurring joke. Krieger's van is blown up again, which leads Krieger to reenact his cry of pain and scream, "You blew it up!".

Archer's Voicemail Hoax

Archer Wallpaper - features image - season 4

Archer's elaborate voicemail hoax became a work of art with every voicemail that was made. This is also one of the oldest recurring jokes, starting in Season 1, Episode 10, "Dial M for Mother," where it was a simple, "Hello... Ha! Voicemail. You know what to do." This evolved to Archer rewiring the house to turn on disco lights and blast music through speakers. The joke was hidden from the coma seasons mainly due to the seasons being set in a timeline where cellphones had not been invented yet, so seeing it return in Season 11, Episode 3, "Helping Hands" was a comforting breath of fresh air. Although, this joke is twisted back onto Sterling when Malory and Cheryl make an elaborate voicemail hoax of their own.

Phrasing/Sploosh

This was a recurring joke which still made its way onto the coma seasons, but it was not used as much as before. Unfortunately, at least as of the third episode, this joke seems to have lived its life. In Season 11, Episode 2, "Bloodsploosh," Archer is heartbroken to hear that in the three years he was in a coma, the team had stopped doing phrasing and sploosh. This is not the first time Archer is heartbroken about the lack of phrasing, as Archer: Vice had a whole dialogue about how phrasing has disappeared despite the many instances it could have been used. There is still hope that this joke will make its long awaited return.

Starring the voices of H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates and Jessica Walter, the 11th season of Archer airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FXX.

Joe Biden tweets joke mocking 'earpiece' and 'drug' allegations with photo of headphones and ice cream - USA TODAY

cucun.indah.link

Ahead of the first presidential debate Tuesday evening, former Vice President Joe Biden mocked the unfounded allegations that he relies on an earpiece and performance enhancing drugs to appear coherent.

"It’s debate night, so I’ve got my earpiece and performance enhancers ready," he wrote on Twitter with a photo of tangled earbuds and a pint of ice cream.

The remark comes after President Donald Trump and campaign surrogates, who have repeatedly suggested that Biden lacks the physical fitness and mental acuity to serve as president, advocated for pre-debate ear inspections and drug tests.

Rumors have swirled on social media that Biden used an earpiece at a town hall in September, prompting the demand for third-party ear checkers.

But a review of the footage from the town hall shows Biden was not wearing an earpiece.

Nevertheless, the Trump team hammered in the point on Tuesday with a claim that Biden had backed out of a pre-debate inspection for electronic earpieces.

Fact check: Allegations that Joe Biden wore an earpiece at town hall, debate are false

Last week, Trump also claimed Biden will "get a big shot of something" before the debate for energy. On Sunday, he tweeted that he would be "strongly demanding a Drug Test of Sleepy Joe Biden prior to, or after, the Debate on Tuesday night."

In retort, Kate Bedingfield, the deputy campaign manager for Biden, fired off a joke of her own.

“Vice President Biden intends to deliver his debate answers in words," she said. "If the president thinks his best case is made in urine he can have at it."

In a call before the debate, Bedingfield also told reporters, "Of course he’s not wearing an earpiece," and denied having asked for breaks throughout the 90-minute debate.

The pre-debate tweet also may have been a nod to the state hosting the debate — the ice cream Biden tweeted, Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream, is based out of Columbus, Ohio. The debate is in Cleveland.

Not everyone liked the joke. Steve Guest, a spokesperson for the Republican Party, took to Twitter to call out the price of the brand, which is also known to be a favorite of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

"Just like Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden is an out of touch elitist," Guest wrote. "Did Biden happen to get the $13-dollar a pint ice cream out of Pelosi’s $24,000 fridge?"

Coinbase’s New Policy: Anti-Woke or Just a Joke? - CoinDesk - CoinDesk

cucun.indah.link

CEO Brian Armstrong’s letter has not just the crypto world but the larger world of tech and business talking about the role of corporations in society.

Monday, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong published the innocuously titled “Coinbase Is a Mission-Driven Company.”

While the post talked a lot about Coinbase’s core mission, its real goal seemed to be to make clear Coinbase would not be engaging with any other social or political issues beyond that, and to the extent employees wanted to do so they needed to do it on their own time.

The reactions were intense, immediate and in many instances, totally opposite.

In this episode, NLW breaks down the entire social media reaction and the arguments for and against this policy.

Code 404, the latest British series Peacock is bringing to American audiences, answers a question no one but the show's creators were asking: What if RoboCop (or The Six Million Dollar Man or whichever enhanced human you prefer) was funny? The series is set in a near-future London in which a new AI technology is used to bring back Detective Inspector John Major (Daniel Mays), an undercover cop who died in the line of duty. Unlike RoboCop, however, this technological marvel doesn’t lead to a cyborg who’s more machine than man; instead, it results in the reanimation of an arrogant human whose technological enhancements make him idiotically overconfident, and sometimes just an idiot. While this sets up a variety of comic scenarios, only some of them land. More successful is the ongoing investigation into who killed Major in the first place, a mystery that provides some intrigue and keeps the story moving.

When he was alive Major was supposed to be the best detective in his unit. While this paints him in the vein of Simon Pegg’s character in Hot Fuzz, he’s dead within the first three minutes of the first episode, so we mostly have to take the show’s word for it. In the brief scene before he meets his end, Major demonstrates some prowess for undercover work but also doesn’t come across as especially intelligent. If anything, he seems like many other loud, egotistical white men whose reputation is based more on his words than his actions -- something that continues once he’s brought back. In fact, it seems his partner and best friend, DI Roy Carver (Stephen Graham) may be just as talented a detective as Major, but his reserved demeanor and short stature have prevented him from getting the same level of recognition.

Of course, it’s hard to say for sure because it’s only once Major is brought back that Carver is really shown stepping into action. And at that point, Major is working at a serious deficit. See, that Major is brought back by AI is an important point. Major has no physical enhancements, it’s his brain that's been augmented. Unfortunately, instead of improving his cognitive capacity, the AI leaves him lacking. As a result, he returns as a horrible detective whose terrible decisions often cause Carver to function more like his babysitter than his partner.

Hilarity is supposed to ensue, but the jokes that arise from Major’s stupidity and Carver’s frustration are uneven. One bit in which Major snorts drugs because he believes narcotics no longer affect him and then awkwardly frees himself from a locked car by shimmying out the window goes from head-scratching to a chuckle-worthy bit of physical comedy. Meanwhile, an episode-long gag in which the most recent upload of Major's AI has him spouting Americanisms because the woman behind Majors’ revival, Dr. Alison Parfit (Amanda Payton) is American, is tedious as soon as it begins. (Maybe this worked better in the UK, but it’s hard to believe a character using the word “attorney” instead of “lawyer” elicits guffaws in any country.)

Still, at only six episodes of about 25 minutes each, Code 404 is quick, light and witty enough to keep things pleasantly zipping along. While Major and Carver are sent on cases of the week, these are incidental to their ongoing investigation into Major’s murder. It’s unusual for a comedy that employs so much stupid humor to also put so much effort into creating a fairly engrossing mystery. The combination works in the show’s favor, however, as the challenges of solving that mystery make the characters -- and the show -- far more compelling than it would be otherwise.

Less successful are Major’s attempts to win back his wife Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin), only to realize she’s found someone else while he was (supposedly) dead. Even though he was aware something was going on between Kelly and Carver before he died, he conveniently forgets this once he’s brought back. He then spends a majority of the season wondering who Kelly was with while remaining sadly oblivious that it was his partner, despite all the evidence clearly pointing in that direction.

While Kelly is an interesting character and Maxwell Martin is great in the role, the plot never quite does her justice. Graham and Mays are also fantastic, and it’s the commitment of the actors and the believable relationships they build with each other's characters that help make up for some of the show’s weaker elements.

All in all, Code 404 is neither the funniest nor the most clever comedy you’ll encounter this year. Nonetheless, if the show’s RoboCop meets Hot Fuzz premise piques your interest, this is an agreeable, low-commitment binge that’s good for a few laughs.

Code 404, starring Stephen Graham, Daniel Mays, Anna Maxwell Martin, Amanda Payton and Rosie Cavaliero, is available on Peacock on Thursday, Oct. 1.
