Archer: The 5 Best Returning Recurring Jokes In Season 11 | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for the first three episodes of Archer Season 11, now airing on FXX.

The return of Archer in Season 11 is also the return of the "modern day" post-coma life of the World's Greatest Spy. While the previous three seasons had their own style and tried to bring in some of the recurring jokes of the previous seasons, there were some that they were unable to do. Luckily, Season 11 reintroduces many of the recurring jokes that stuck with audiences, including these five.

Lana, Lana, Lanaaaaaaaaa

One of the funniest recurring jokes is when Sterling Archer tries to get Lana Kane's attention by repeating her name twice, followed by a long winded scream of her name, which goes uninterrupted until she answers him. This joke was not possible due to the relationships in Dreamland, Danger Island or 1999, but Season 11 brings this joke back with a little twist. In Season 11, Episode 3, "Helping Hands," it's Lana who takes the reins of this joke and turns it onto Sterling with an, "Archer, Archer, Archerrrrrrrr." This is a refreshing revamp of the joke that made audiences giddy to hear once more.

Cyril Figgis' Suppressing Fire

When Cyril Figgis first became a field agent, he was scared of everything around him. He was not a man made for the field, so instead of being stealthy, he would stand with his eyes closed and gun at the ready, clearing the ammunition while screaming his battle cry, "suppressing fire." While he tried, he never hit a target.  In Season 11, Episode 1, "The Orpheus Gambit," another twist is taken to this recurring joke when Cyril, now a tactical lead on missions, orders Archer to lay some cover fire while the team spreads out. Much to Sterling's annoyance, he stands up and copies his coworker's battle cry, screaming "suppressing fire" as he shoots around like a mad man.

You Blew Up Krieger's Van

This joke shockingly became a recurring one due to it being more of a reference to Planet of the Apes than it being one bred from the minds of the writers, featuring Krieger falling to his knees and pounding the ground while crying out, "You blew it up!" This has become one of the funniest recurring jokes, mainly due to Lucky Yates (Krieger's voice actor) delivering it with such enthusiasm and veracity. This joke made its comeback in Season 11, Episode 3, "Helping Hands" and was combined with another recurring joke. Krieger's van is blown up again, which leads Krieger to reenact his cry of pain and scream, "You blew it up!".

Archer's Voicemail Hoax

Archer's elaborate voicemail hoax became a work of art with every voicemail that was made. This is also one of the oldest recurring jokes, starting in Season 1, Episode 10, "Dial M for Mother," where it was a simple, "Hello... Ha! Voicemail. You know what to do." This evolved to Archer rewiring the house to turn on disco lights and blast music through speakers. The joke was hidden from the coma seasons mainly due to the seasons being set in a timeline where cellphones had not been invented yet, so seeing it return in Season 11, Episode 3, "Helping Hands" was a comforting breath of fresh air. Although, this joke is twisted back onto Sterling when Malory and Cheryl make an elaborate voicemail hoax of their own.

Phrasing/Sploosh

This was a recurring joke which still made its way onto the coma seasons, but it was not used as much as before. Unfortunately, at least as of the third episode, this joke seems to have lived its life. In Season 11, Episode 2, "Bloodsploosh," Archer is heartbroken to hear that in the three years he was in a coma, the team had stopped doing phrasing and sploosh. This is not the first time Archer is heartbroken about the lack of phrasing, as Archer: Vice had a whole dialogue about how phrasing has disappeared despite the many instances it could have been used. There is still hope that this joke will make its long awaited return.
