NBC slammed for not addressing anti-Semitic ‘SNL’ joke: 'Whatever the reasons, bad show, NBC!' - Fox News

cucun.indah.link

NBC is getting flack for not addressing a joke made last week by "Saturday Night Live" star Michael Che that many deemed "anti-Semitic."

"Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population. I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half," Che said last week on the show’s "Weekend Update."

The joke stoked the ire of viewers and pro-Israeli groups like the American Jewish Committee (AJC), which created a petition for NBC "to retract its outrageous claim and apologize immediately."

A week later, with no comment from the Peacock Network, AJC CEO David Harris criticized NBC for not addressing the controversy on Saturday night’s broadcast.

PROTEST OUTSIDE NBC STUDIOS AGAINST 'SNL' STAR MICHAEL CHE'S 'ANTI-SEMITIC' JOKE PLANNED

"There was a chance for @NBC to apologize last night on @NBCSNL for last week’s antisemitic segment," Harris wrote on Twitter Sunday. "Didn’t happen. Corporate arrogance? Corporate irresponsibility? Corporate insensitivity? What the reasons, bad show, NBC! In an era of rising hate, NBC only added to it."

The AJC previously slammed the network for spreading "lies" about Israel, playing into "antisemitic tropes" and pouring fuel on "surging antisemitism."

A protest co-sponsored by End Jew Hatred, former Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Liberate Art, and Yad Yamin New York, was held outside of NBC Studios on Saturday.

Golden Globes Comedy Actor Nominees Joke About Tracy Morgan Mispronouncing ‘Soul’ - TheWrap

cucun.indah.link

Tracy Morgan would like to congratulate “Sal,” which he announced as the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Original Score on Sunday.

Yes, you heard him correctly. Though Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won for the award for their score for Pixar’s animated “Soul,” Morgan pronounced the film as “Sal.” The Globes quickly cut away to Batiste’s acceptance speech, but Morgan’s flub didn’t go unnoticed. Shortly after the musicians’ acceptance speeches, you could hear the nominees in the Best Actor in a Comedy category joking about the mispronunciation.

Ramy Youssef and Jason Sudeikis were among those who caught on, with Sudeikis (who, moments later, won the Best Actor prize for “Ted Lasso”) referring to it as though there were a place called “Soul’s Pizzeria.” Co-host Tina Fey later made fun of Morgan for being a real “beautiful sawel.”

Whether he intended the flub or not, that’s just Morgan being Morgan. Earlier on, he joked that after we all reach herd immunity for COVID-19, we’ll next reach herd immunity for gonorrhea.

Morgan was also not alone in a messy awards show night that included Daniel Kaluuya accidentally being muted as he accepted the first prize of the night, and Catherine O’Hara’s husband playing music from his phone during her acceptance speech, pretending to play her offstage.

Check out a clip of Morgan’s “Sal” flub below:

David Letterman's Joke About Monica Lewinsky Has Not Aged Well: 'I Feel Bad About My Role' - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

cucun.indah.link

Over the course of his long, decorated career as a late-night TV talk show host, David Letterman became well known for his acerbic wit. The now-retired host pulled no punches – he regularly went after all kinds of targets with his jokes. Usually, anyone in Letterman’s sights had it coming. In one case, however, Letterman made some regrettable jokes he wished he could take back. It had to do with President Bill Clinton and the woman he had an extramarital sexual relationship with, Monica Lewinsky.

The White House scandal every late-night talk show host joked about

In the late ’90s, the Bill Clinton sex scandal exploded to take over the headlines. Initially denying an affair had taken place, Clinton eventually acknowledged the fact that he’d had a sexual relationship with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky. Clinton was eventually impeached for lying under oath about this, though he would not be removed from office over it.

Late-night talk shows had a field day with the event, skewering both Clinton and Lewinsky for the lewd incidents in question. At the time, Clinton was lambasted for his poor judgment while Lewinsky was lampooned for her mere participation. Viewed through today’s lens, however, the entire ordeal stands out as a case of an extremely powerful man abusing his position to take advantage of a young woman who, while willing, was much less powerful than the leader of the free world. Before the Me Too era, it was a glaring example of sexual power dynamics at play.

David Letterman’s joke about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky

Like his other late-night counterparts, Letterman tackled the dominant news stories of the day on every show. As one of the subjects of the biggest story in the news at the time, Letterman saw Lewinsky as fair game. He’d mock her on a nightly basis, often joking about her role in the entire scandal. He even fashioned at least one “Top Ten” list around her: “Top Ten First Lines From Monica Lewinsky’s New Book.” Prior to reading the list, he told a cheering audience, “You all know the drill, we’ve been through this before.” Number one on the list? “Me and my big mouth!”

At the time, Letterman’s routine was no different from any other comedian with a large platform. But in retrospect, Letterman had definite second thoughts in the role he played in Lewinsky’s exceedingly public humiliation. He may not have been the reason she was in the position she was in, but he certainly didn’t make things better.

David Letterman regretted his Monica Lewinsky joke

Years later in an interview with Barbara Walters, Letterman owned up to making so many Lewinsky jokes. According to Vanity Fair, he told Walters: “I feel bad about my role in helping push the humiliation to the point of suffocation.” Letterman added that Lewinsky’s fame and notoriety was less tied to her actions being significantly despicable, and more about her being young: “Let’s just say she was working at Dairy Queen—and I’m not being funny. But let’s just say the same thing happened at Dairy Queen, would she then tell her kids that it was a big mistake? Or would she just say, ‘Oh for God’s sake I was 22, and 22-year-olds are irresponsible’ and on and on.”

Lewinsky sat down with Walters herself after the scandal and has worked hard to get the past behind her, no matter how often it is brought up. Lewinsky has dedicated her life to writing and is a champion for anti-bullying initiatives. Letterman’s regret over his role as a comedic agitator may not be of much use for Lewinsky, but it’s gracious nonetheless. It at least allows other influential figures in entertainment to consider the weight of their words when they’re dealing with a similar person or subject going forward.

'Finding the Funny in the Crummy:' Amy Lyle hosts TED Talk on power of connective humor - Forsyth County News Online

cucun.indah.link

This article appears in the March issue of  400 Life Magazine

Between her stand-up comedy career, web series and being a regular guest on other shows, Amy Lyle is used to public speaking and being in front of a crowd, but, according to her, a recent endeavor was unlike anything she’s ever done.

In January, TEDxBeaconStreet, an offshoot of TED Talks, posted Lyle’s presentation, “Finding the Funny in the Crummy,” where the comedian discusses connective humor — a phrase Lyle coined for jokes — even from things that might not have been funny at the time, that creates a relatable bond between the teller and the listener.

In her talk, Lyle gives an example of falling “all the way down” a flight of stairs while at work. Lyle said she remembered being humiliated at the moment until a woman who helped her asked, “But did you chip your teeth?”

“She had chipped her teeth in a great fall, and in that moment, we laughed,” Lyle told the audience, “but more importantly, we connected. By sharing her great fall, I felt better about mine. The healing power of humor is much stronger than we think.”

In a recent interview with 400 Life, Lyle spoke about what it was like writing and performing a TED Talk, which is a bit more academic than most comedy and what lessons she hoped viewers walked away with.

“It was just great,” she said. “The whole point was I wanted to spread this message of how can you learn to see the world through a lens of humor if you don’t. Naturally, I see the world that way, but other people don’t, so I went through the steps of that. It’s like looking for gratitude every day. It’s a muscle, and if you start looking for gratitude, you see gratitude.

“It’s the same for humor. If you start looking for humor every day, you see humor.”

In the presentation, Lyle cites two studies that look at the impacts of connective humor.

The first was a study that looked at one group of American POWs from the Vietnam War who, compared to other captives, came away with less PTSD or other issues, which the soldiers and researchers said was due to maintaining a sense of humor.

“Even though it was morbid and horrible, in that moment, that’s what they clung to, and it saved their sanity,” Lyle said.

Similarly, Lyle said there were several studies looking at humor for those who have fought breast cancer and a friend who is a breast cancer survivor was able to give Lyle her take on it.

“I love this quote. She said ‘being able to find the funny in the not-so-funny’ made her feel better, but it also made the people around her feel better because they didn’t know what to say to her because she had breast cancer,” Lyle said. “And, of course, breast cancer is not funny, but there was some funny things going on at that time. Like, for example, she said her dad asked her about her ‘autopsy’ on the day of her biopsy.”

The Funniest TikTok Trends Of All Time Will Never Not Be Funny - Elite Daily

cucun.indah.link

Ready for some TikTok nostalgia? It's about time we revisited the funniest TikTok trends of all time. Viral videos are a dime a dozen these days, and at the pace new memes start picking up speed at, it's almost impossible to revisit and catalogue all the greats. While the app has only been popularized in the last couple years, it's produced so many epic trends, so it feels like longer. But, we can still walk down memory lane.

TikTok trends aren’t always funny; a sick dance move or two is bound to gain you more followers if the trend takes off compared to your stand-up routine. The app is geared towards music-listening experiences, but every so often, a trend that makes people LOL skyrockets to the top of the trending audio list. Whether intentional or not, ordinary posters have become overnight stars by posting their reactions and jokes.

There are so many funny trends to unpack, but some of the best have major longevity and are still meme-d and recreated to this day. The trends aren’t just pranks, but viral clips of audio taken and repurposed from other platforms, too. If you’re a TikTok historian, or even just longing for a sense of nostalgia for the early days of the lip-syncing platform, this list is for you. Scroll through the top nine funniest viral trends and videos from over the past few years below.

9. VSCO Girls

The HydroFlask craze of yesteryear inspired teens to create a larger-than-life imitation of a young girl who loves using the VSCO photo editing app and wants to save the turtles. It was one of the earliest memes on TikTok in 2019, and might not be all that funny in the present day, but the nostalgia is strong.

8. “I’m Busy Right Now”

The “I’m Busy Right Now” trend is an incredibly recent one, but its popularization by A-list influencers led to some funny reactions that are already highlights of 2021 mainstream meme culture. Just be careful before pranking Kim Kardashian with this one, she can’t be fooled.

7. “Slide Around” Dance

“Give me five/ it’s a vibe,” is probably the most memorable TikTok verse from summer 2019, and the various dances inspired by Nicki Minaj and Chance The Rapper’s hit track will always cheer you up. Everyone admitted to their guilty pleasures or flaws, but while still looking fly.

6. Bunny The Talking Dog

A talking dog is bound to make any top 10 list, but TikTok users’ recreations of Bunny’s existential crises will always be hilarious. Sure, Bunny can’t really “talk,” but he’s got a lot of buttons to try out just in case he needs to ask for more pets.

5. “Why Would You Play With Me?”

Falling down from excitement at this entry? Same. The “Why Would You Play With Me” trend where TikTokers basically go limp with fear or embarrassment caused people to laugh out loud with its various interpretations, and it absolutely took over TikTok.

4. Duet Chains

Duetting is a key feature of comedy TikToks, but massive duet chains had the internet LOL’ing in 2020. From adding limbs to changing the actions of the previous duetter, these chains are downright creative.

3. The Juggalo Resurgence

In 2019, a legion of e-clowns rediscovered a plethora of Insane Clown Posse songs and used them to create their own hilariously strange skits, and, of course, paint their faces with clown makeup. Avani Gregg made a name for herself due, in part, to the trend, and helped popularize the audios.

2. Brittany Broski’s Kombucha Taste Test

“Kombucha Girl” was a crucial video that spurred the original surge of users to log onto TikTok and make their own videos inspired by Brittany’s hilarious taste test. The year 2019 might seem far away these days, but this trend still makes users laugh to this day.

1. Nicki Minaj’s Audios

The Queen of Rap is rightfully also the Queen of TikTok, without ever even making a viral video on the platform herself. She doesn't post much on the app, but that hasn't stopped TikTokers from running with her audios from other platforms. Several audio clips from Nicki Minaj’s various Queen Radio rants and Instagram livestreams have gone viral, triggering millions of users to make videos using her voice and mannerisms in their own videos. Every single trend is more hilarious than the one before it, and her spoken-word clips prove the longevity of Nicki’s career as a pop culture personality.

Bengals have fun with a jersey redesign joke on social media - Bengals Wire

cucun.indah.link

What the redesigned Cincinnati Bengals jerseys might end up looking like is one of the most interesting things about the team this offseason as it strives to have better engagement and connection with fans.

Saturday was more proof of that, as the Bengals social team had some fun with hitting 900,000 followers by posting a joke of a message that hinted at the redesigned jerseys.

And by hint, we mean a mere pixel.

It’s a funny move by one of the budding best social teams in the league. But the team has let some detail slip. It announced, for example, that the striped helmet won’t change. The team’s website might have also let a hint slip.

And then there was a letter to fans by the team, which made a point to offer a notable hint.

For now, this funny visual is what fans get otherwise:

Freedom of speech is a joke - Daily Pioneer

cucun.indah.link

The jokes made by stand-ups are rarely personal; they are about the hypocrisy in the system, religion and society, and that offends religious gurus and netas

Now that the intolerance debate is over and it has been established beyond reasonable doubt that we are a tolerant nation, we can safely discuss the limits of freedom of speech. Back in the bad old days when there was presumed intolerance, people had to be silenced by mob lynching or guns. Not such uncivilised behaviour anymore. We can take revenge in a nonviolent civilised way by filing FIRs and slapping defamation cases. That is a massive upgrade.

Had it not been for those in the bad habit of speaking out about anything, including their elected Government, it wouldn’t be required. Earlier it was journalists, writers, authors and thespians. Now, another breed of the so-called champions of free speech, comedians, have joined the gang, especially the stand-up comedians.

The freedom to speak, laugh or breathe has to be balanced with the other person’s right to get offended. Sure thing. If you are breathing air reserved for someone else, you are choking him. If your deafening laughter hurts and jokes make me throw up, you had better watch out. Now that is a joke but no laughing matter.

Indeed, offending anyone is not a good idea, especially when you laugh at someone’s looks or body size. The person has indeed the right to get offended. Ironically, that is often tolerated by the society. Kapil Sharma’s blatant humour at the expense of his co-stars is ignored. No one files an FIR against him. The problem starts when the jokes, laced with truth, blast the hypocrisy of those in power. The jokes cracked by the stand-up are rarely personal. Her/his jokes are about the hypocrisy in the system, religion and society, and that offends people. In fact, the two most offended sets of people are religious gurus and politicians.

To say you belong to a religion is one thing but to presume that the religion belongs to you, quite another. In 2015, the self-appointed defenders of Islam shot Charlie Hebdo employees in Paris. For what? For a few lines they had used to depict the Prophet! But the Quran does not explicitly forbid images of the Prophet. Back home, Munawar Faruqui spent a few nights in the Indore Jail for allegedly cracking anti-Hindu jokes. Now, who gave these people – Hindus and Muslims – the proprietary of the religion they were accidentally born into? When did the gods ask you to defend them?

Be offended if a priest of your shrine rapes. Be outraged when your co-religionist kills in the name of your religion. But that doesn’t happen. You prove your bravado by heckling and harassing a comic whose words were too offending for you. Religion is not someone’s personal turf that he ought to defend. A person has the right to get offended if he is body shamed. A guy may take offence to being called fat but it would be rather absurd that he becomes the spokesperson for all fat people on the planet. A self-appointed policeman to protect all people overweight!

The other group of most offended types is the politicians. These are the people who make a joke of the system but, when ridiculed, act sacrosanct. They must not be laughed at. That is the exaggerated sense of entitlement. Napoleon Bonaparte once said: “In politics, absurdity is not a handicap.” Exactly, they are kind of necessary evil but don’t risk telling them that. You could end up in jail.

Indian politicians are known for many things but humour isn’t one of them, though we have had a few exceptions. Mahatma Gandhi was never offended when Sarojini Naidu called him Mickey Mouse. Piloo Mody often took jibes at Indira Gandhi. Laloo’s humour is infectious. The incumbent Prime Minister, too, has a good sense of humour. He pokes fun at his opponents with Ă©lan, though how much he enjoys jokes on himself is not clear. We have had the tradition of court jesters, or vidushaks. Haasya kavis kept the joke alive and roasted the politicians to their face. Today, the mantle has passed on to stand-up comics.

Political humour and satire are well established in the US. At the President’s dinner, people roast the very President who hosts them. The fearless stand-up, George Carlin, never compromised his right to free speech. Today’s comedians in the US owe much to Carlin. In India, stand-up comedy started rather late, but the comedians have caught up with the rest. Their fearless rendering has made many people uncomfortable but, at the same time, won them the respect and following they well deserve.

In the US, comics can get away with a lot. It’s different here. Cases of sedition have been filed against cartoonists, satirists and artists. That is the price for calling the Government’s bluff. We live in a country where the political system itself is a big joke. In the House, you have a Speaker who won’t let you speak. We have lawbreakers making laws for us. The judiciary judges everything except itself. It is a system in which the Treasury benches become rich and the Opposition gives walkovers to the opponent by walking out. Is this not a joke worth laughing at?

Comic relief is what the people in power need. It is a safety valve. So here is my unsolicited advice to those politicians who don’t laugh at jokes. Join a laughter yoga club in your vicinity. It is good for your health. It lowers blood pressure and increases your longevity. It might also increase the longevity of your political career.

Blues’ Binnington throws very funny tantrum after being pulled vs. Sharks - NHL

cucun.indah.link

The heat of competition can bring out the worst in people. Sometimes you lose it, and a piece of your dignity in the process. The Blues and Sharks are trading goals on Saturday, and that ended up being bad news for Devan Dubnyk, but in particular, it made Jordan Binnington‘s night pretty miserable.

Ultimately, the biggest winners? That would be us.

Binnington really flipped out after being pulled from Saturday’s Sharks – Blues game.

As you can see from the GIF via Brodie Brazil of NBC Sports California, Jordan Binnington did the following after being pulled vs. the Sharks:

  • Looked like he was about to hit Erik Karlsson.
  • Seemed to be on the verge of fighting with Devan Dubnyk. As the commentary crew rightly point out, that might not have gone well for Binnington.
  • Made some pretty funny tough guy poses on his way out.

It’s really good stuff. Honestly, even Blues fans should enjoy a little chuckle at Binnington’s tantrum.

(Honestly, goalies should just assume that they’re going to have a long night most evenings vs. the Sharks, even if they’re probably likely to get the win. Unless they get pulled, that is.)

Ville Husso and the Blues ended up getting the last laugh, beating the Sharks 7-6.

OK, maybe that’s not totally true. It seems like Devan Dubnyk still got the last laugh.

Check out the video above this post’s headline for a more extended look at all of the comedy. For those of us who needed a laugh: thank you, Jordan Binnington.

'Antisemitism isn't funny': Protest against SNL Israel joke outside NBC - The Jerusalem Post

cucun.indah.link
A crowd gathered outside NBC headquarters in New York City on Saturday night to protest against a joke about vaccinations in Israel from last week's episode of Saturday Night Live, shortly before this week's episode aired, according to the New York Post.
Dov Hikind, a former NY state assemblyman and founder of Americans Against Antisemitism, organized the protest, stressing in an invite to the event on social media that NBC needs to be told that "antisemitism is NEVER funny."
Protesters chanted "Shame on NBC!" and "Antisemitism is not funny!" outside the network's West 49th Street entrance, according to the newspaper.
Activists and organizations have expressed outrage at the joke by comedian Michael Che, who stated during the Weekend Update segment of SNL that "Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population. I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half."
"It’s amazing that they have not apologized yet," Hikind said to the Post. “They did something so egregious, so horrible; I’m personally sick and tired of a major network like NBC indulging in spreading hate. That’s basically what they did.”
“I’m not going to be silent about this stuff that really endangers the Jewish people,” added Hikind.
In the invite to the event, Hikind stressed that "no one needs to get cancelled but lots of people need to get educated about Jew-hate." In a video on Twitter, he said that "we are going to NBC to educate, not to crucify anybody. We are going there to say 'this is not funny.'"

Crowd protests 'SNL' vaccine joke as anti-Semitism - New York Post

“Saturday Night Live” wasn’t getting any laughs on West 49th Street, as dozens turned out with bullhorns and signs to protest a joke from the week before about vaccinations in Israel.

The crowd, led hours before the show aired by former state Assemblyman Dov Hikind, chanted “Shame on NBC!” and “Anti-Semitism is not funny!” outside NBC’s West 49th Street entrance.

Comedian Michael Che had sparked backlash when he joked on a recent “Weekend Update” segment: “Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population. I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half.”

“It’s amazing that they have not apologized yet,” Hikind told The Post.

“They did something so egregious, so horrible, I’m personally sick and tired of a major network like NBC indulging in spreading hate. That’s basically what they did.”

He vowed to continue “whatever has to be done” until the issue is recognized.

“I’m not going to be silent about this stuff that really endangers the Jewish people,” he said.

‘Saturday Night Live’ delivers time-honored N.J. joke about new vaccine - NJ.com

cucun.indah.link

Saturday Night Live” had a New Jersey host and musical guest in Nick Jonas, who pulled double duty this week.

But the show also relied on at least one traditional Jersey joke so old it doesn’t need to dial an area code.

The Garden State shoutout arrived during “Weekend Update” Saturday, in a segment about a new COVID-19 vaccine.

“The FDA has authorized a vaccine from New Jersey-based company Johnson & Johnson,” co-host Michael Che said. “Johnson & Johnson will now pair the vaccine with needles from New Jersey’s No. 1 syringe supplier: the beach.”

VACCINE NEARS FDA APPROVAL

Vials of the COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson.AP

Johnson & Johnson is headquartered in New Brunswick. The Food and Drug Administration approved the company’s one-shot vaccine Saturday. Shipments of the vaccine — which, unlike other vaccines, requires just one dose — could begin by Monday.

Of course, the old “needles on the beach” joke is based on actual events. In 1988, beaches at Ortley and Island Beach State Park closed after vials of blood that washed up there tested positive for hepatitis B and AIDS. Tourists stayed well away as hypodermic needles and syringes were found on Jersey beaches.

In 2018, more than a dozen beaches in Monmouth County closed after needles were found. Officials blamed sewage overflows from New York and New Jersey.

Protest outside NBC Studios against 'SNL' star Michael Che's 'anti-Semitic' joke planned - Fox News

cucun.indah.link

Supporters of a grassroots movement committed to Jewish liberation plan to hold a protest outside of NBC studios on Saturday in response to a recent "anti-Semitic" joke made by "Saturday Night Live" star Michael Che, Fox News has learned.

The protest is being co-sponsored by End Jew Hatred, former Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Liberate Art and Yad Yamin New York.

Individuals planning to protest at the New York City studios slammed Che's joke on last Saturday's "SNL" episode in which the comedian said: "Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population. I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half."

"Michael Che is a bigot - plain and simple. Not only was his ‘joke’ the laziest form of comedy, it perpetuated a vile lie that stands to exacerbate already rising antisemitism in the United States. NBC must make it clear that Jew Hatred has no place on its network and hold Che and the SNL writers responsible for spreading hate," Brooke Goldstein, executive director of The Laware Project and an End Jew Hatred partner, said in a statement to Fox News.

Che has been facing backlash throughout the week for the joke, which many critics called "anti-Semitic."

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) told Fox News in a statement Monday evening that while the segment is "known for sharp criticism and public takedowns," Che's joke "not only missed the mark, but crossed the line -- basing the premise of the joke on factual inaccuracies and playing into an antisemitic trope in the process."

The group went even further to say it has been monitoring "Weekend Update" this season and said the segment has "inappropriately use[d] Jews as the punchline" multiple times.

The statement drew attention on social media, causing an uproar with viewers and sparked a petition from the American Jewish Committee (AJC) for NBC "to retract its outrageous claim and apologize immediately."

The organization called the joke "categorically false" and a "dangerous, modern twist on a classic antisemitic trope that has inspired the mass murder of countless Jews throughout the centuries."

The petition continued: "Words have consequences, and Jews are at risk when a major American TV company joins with those who claim Israel is favoring only a portion of its citizens in its admirable efforts, praised by Dr. Anthony Fauci and others, to vaccinate all of its residents."

The boxing world was left underwhelmed and frustrated after promising New Zealand talent David Nyika won his professional debut in just 29 seconds.

Fans were eager to see Nyika, a Commonwealth gold medallist, make his professional debut on the undercard of New Zealand's biggest fight night event.

'TONE DEAF': Mike Tyson unleashes on 'inappropriate' biopic drama

OH DEAR: 180kg man mountain's embarrassing celebration fail

But the boxing world didn't get to see much of the prodigious talent in action after he dispatched of Jesse Maio in 20 seconds.

Nyika caught Maio around the ear with a big right hook and his opponent was sent crashing to the floor.

Maio complained to the referee he was caught from behind the head, but it was all for nothing as he didn't meet the count.

Fans on social media were left bitterly disappointed with Maio's performance and the anti-climatic finish.

Despite the short showing, Nyika's future looks bright and even apologised to the fans after the fight.

“I’m sorry I didn’t get to put the show on I wanted to," he said after the fight.

Joseph Parker makes statement

Heavyweight contender Joseph Parker was able to come away with a hard-fought victory over Junior Fa to jeep his title dreams alive.

Billed as the biggest boxing event in New Zealand history, Parker won 119-109, 115-113, 117,111 on the judges scorecards.

However, Parker would have been looking for a statement in the fight to put him right back in the title contention.

Fa, hitherto unbeaten in 19 fights, put on a good display throughout the 12 rounds, but Parker's volume of punches was too much and showed on the scorecards.

Solomon: Our Texans jokes aren’t as funny as the real thing - Houston Chronicle

cucun.indah.link

When we have said the Houston Texans franchise is a joke, we didn’t mean it literally.

Turns out our jokes, and we have plenty, aren’t as funny as the reality.

Comedian Barry Laminack and I planned a skit that included scenes of Cal McNair playing checkers while Bill Belichick was playing chess, and the Texans CEO engaged with an Etch A Sketch during an important meeting.

Ha. Ha.

As hilarious at Laminack’s bits are, I’m not sure he could top the behind-the-scenes story former Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels told on the “Pass It Down” podcast.

Rosenfels recalled asking fellow QB David Carr about McNair’s role with his daddy’s team back in 2006.

Carr told him that he had recently left son-of-Bob’s office, where McNair was sitting on the floor in an unfurnished space save for a large television that he was playing video games on.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

This is who is running your Houston Texans, ladies and gentlemen.

Son-of-Bob is the second name on the organizational chart, beneath his mama Janice McNair, the franchise’s co-founder and senior chair.

Jack Easterby, executive vice president of football operations, is listed fourth, behind the McNairs and newly hired general manager Nick Caserio.

Since Easterby was the one who hired Caserio, that ranking is more for appearances sake. Wink-wink.

Haha. Haha. Haha.

If you’re in the mood for some pure, uncut comedy, go online and checkout the video clips of Easterby preaching the Gospel with a Larry the Cable Guy flair. That’s funny right there.

The ridicule abounds.

Texas fans are digging deep these days, taking old sermons from Easterby, whose entry into the NFL was as a team chaplain, and using them as evidence that he has no business running an NFL team.

Lord knows, that is unfortunate.

Easterby could not have imagined that he would one day be entrusted with an executive level position for an NFL franchise, and people would unearth cringe-worthy speeches where in one he wonders if Jesus did a Los Angeles street gang dance across the Sea of Galilee.

Tee. Hee.

Bill Belichick said he never imagined Easterby being involved in the Patriots’ football business because he isn’t a football personnel guy. Six years with the team, and he was listed as the character coach.

The first time I met Easterby, recognizing that he had no meaningful football knowledge to offer, I asked him about faith and religion … his area of expertise.

So, an NFL team’s major decisions are being made by a guy who allegedly didn’t have the wherewithal to buy office future to hide that he wasn’t working, and an evangelist.

This would make for a good logline for a television sitcom proposal.

Throw in a rookie head coach, who is eligible for social security, and a disgruntled star quarterback, who wants out of this crappy show, and this could sell.

Unrealistic, sure, but hilarious.

Should the pilot begin with the old man playing videogames or the Crip-Walking preacher?

I’m just trying to decide if the conversation where the coach begs the quarterback to stay with the dysfunctional organization would be funnier if taped before a live studio audience or accompanied by a laugh track.

Those of you who see this TV show with the quarterback as the villain don’t understand comedy.

If you’re looking for a bad guy in this story and somehow land on Deshaun Watson, you need to increase your quarantine level to Defcon 1: NO OUTSIDE COMMUNICATION.

The nuclear war on your brain cells has already started, and you are losing.

I surmise that Texans fandom can be like a degenerative brain disease, but from among Cal McNair, Jack Easterby and Deshaun Watson, how can you choose Door No. 3 for your wrath?

That’s not at all funny.

The Texans quarterback doesn’t tumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen to pour himself a cup of ambition every day, so don’t compare your 9-to-5 to his.

Watson, who is on vacation by the way, has been a model teammate and citizen.

He is uniquely talented — there are perhaps four people on the planet better at what he does — and he has shown where his loyalty lies.

Remember that time he took a 12-hour bus ride to a game in Florida because a collapsed lung made it unsafe for him to fly? The broken rib he played with that weekend was a minor, secondary condition.

L … O … L?

Nah, none of that reality makes it into my script.

Actually, it will be better if the hot shot quarterback is traded and the team brought in a lesser talent, a pretty boy Nuke Laloosh-like rookie and an old quarterback with a Ryan “Fitzy Cent” Fitzpatrick beard to groom him.

Now, that’s funny right there.

DNC camp, Julia Louis-Dreyfus' writers clashed over Trump jokes at event: report - Fox News

cucun.indah.link

Despite the actress being a vocal fan of Joe Biden, Julia Louis-Dreyfus' writers reportedly butted heads with the Democratic National Convention's camp ahead of her appearance at the 2020 event.

The actress is known for her sharp tongue -- as is her famed "Veep" character Selina Meyer -- and for her criticism of former President Donald Trump, which she brought in spades to her MC gig at the DNC.

According to Vanity Fair, there was tension between the DNC's camp and "Veep" showrunner David Mandel and his team over some of the jokes in Louis-Dreyfus' script, which they penned.

Just an hour before the 60-year-old actress went live from a Los Angeles studio, political consultant Stephanie Cutter -- the convention’s chief program executive -- reached out to Mandel to talk about the evening's script.

DNC: HOST JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS CHANNELS HER INNER SELINA MEYER AS SHE TAKES SHOTS AT TRUMP, PENCE

Cutter was reportedly unhappy with some of the jokes, one in particular that featured praise for Biden.

Louis-Dreyfus was planning to say that Biden understood hard work and struggle, while "the only time Donald Trump has struggled is walking down a ramp and trying to drink a glass of water."

The joke was in reference to a pair of instances in which Trump appeared to struggle to do the aforementioned tasks that went viral and sparked concern for the then-president's health.

The writers had been told that the joke didn't fit into the place they had originally slotted it, so they moved it to another time rather than cutting it.

When they spoke, Cutter asked why the joke had been put into another spot in the script.

"You told us it didn’t work in the other spot," responded Mandel, per the outlet.

Cutter said that Mandel couldn't have the joke "anywhere" in the script. She said they didn't want to risk "opening the dementia thing" and said that laughing at Trump's faculties may remind viewers that he had painted Biden as a frail person.

"You not opening the dementia thing is not going to prevent the Republicans from doing it till the end of time," Mendel said back in what reportedly became a shouting match. He even thought the joke could have preemptively helped Biden ahead of the upcoming Republican National Convention, according to the outlet.

Cutter reportedly had problems with other jokes in the script as well, and Mandel eventually caved.

"Just tell me what you want," he said. "Dictate it."

Instead of the jab, Louis-Dreyfus ended up saying: "Donald Trump thinks ‘self-made’ means inheriting only half a billion dollars from your dad."

Reps for Louis-Dreyfus, Mandel, Cutter and the White House did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

Ted Cruz Is Already Trying to Joke About His CancĂșn Trip - The Cut

cucun.indah.link
Photo: Alex Wroblewski/Getty Images

Ted Cruz is constantly finding ways to sink to a new low. The senator is already making jokes about taking an ill-begotten vacation to CancĂșn during one of the worst humanitarian crises in his home state’s history, while Texas continues to recover from billions of dollars worth of damage.

In an appearance today at CPAC in Orlando, Florida, Cruz used his CancĂșn getaway as a punch line, just one week after apologizing for taking the expensive, tropical trip while Texans froze to death in their homes, which he admitted afterward was “a mistake.” Onstage during his appearance, Cruz joked, “I’ve gotta say, Orlando is awesome,” before taking a pause. “It’s not as nice as CancĂșn.”

Cruz evidently needs to be reminded that the winter storm he fled, which he’s now referencing for laughs, left dozens of Texans dead. Four million people were without power and 15 million experienced problems with their water. People died in fires and from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of having no heat. A child died of hypothermia under blankets with his siblings while trying to get warm. The residents he represents will be recovering from the damage for years.

This is the suffering that informed Cruz’s attempt to be funny, on yet another trip out of Texas. Today, while Cruz wisecracks, his colleague Senator John Cornyn, Texas governor Greg Abbott, Joe Biden, and multiple Texas representatives are in the state to survey the aftermath. Cruz’s priorities, while offensive and despicable, remain obvious.

Well, I Thought It Was A Good Joke · Jewschool - Jewschool

cucun.indah.link

The SNL joke was a good one. I didn’t find it that funny, but it turns out to have been an excellent joke. Here’s the deal – a joke’s purpose is not to inform you of information. The set-up was that about half of Israel’s population has been vaccinated, while the punchline was that the half that were vaccinated represented the Jewish half. That punchline is not a true statement, but it doesn’t claim to be. In an earlier joke, in the same segment, Michael Che’s punchline implied that he had experience stealing sneakers. That joke was more offensive than the Israel one, but it’s got nothing to do with the veracity of the punchline. Whether or not Michael Che is a sneaker thief, and whether or not non-Jews in Israel are being vaccinated is not relevant to the joke itself.

The value of jokes is not their factual content, but rather their ability to expose knowledge, emotions, or biases that we otherwise have difficulty speaking about. In the case of the sneaker joke, it was our bias that makes it plausible to us that any given black man, including a successful comedian, could be a shoe thief. The Israel joke, on the other hand, brought out the uncomfortable reality that racism and racial disparity are facts of life in Israel. While plenty of non-Jews have been vaccinated, the unfortunate truth is that among the adult population between the river and the sea, the factor that has the highest correlation to whether or not a person is vaccinated is their religion. Now, whose fault that is, why, and what we should do about it, makes for a great policy debate, but the fact alone should make us, as Jews, uncomfortable. Also, this joke isn’t just about COVID-19. If you look at the same population, and any other number of indicators of social prosperity (wealth, employment, education, life expectancy, infant mortality, etc.…) you will see the same correlation, and that makes us rightly uncomfortable.

That discomfort leads to the defensiveness and anger that has been directed at SNL. Since that joke has forced this conversation to happen and brought out all of that energy in its viewers, it’s clearly good satire. Again, I didn’t find it particularly funny, but the joke worked.

There is case can be made that jokes can strengthen biases rather force us to confront them. You can argue that Che’s shoe stealing joke does just that. But, the Israel joke does not do that. The racial inequality within Israel, and certainly between the river and the sea, is real. On the other hand, there is no factual basis to think that a successful, middle age, black man is more likely a thief than someone of a different race. So, the sneaker joke could be accused of furthering black stereotypes, but the Israel joke could not. The underlying issue, the stereotype if you will of the Israel joke – that there is racial disparity in Israel – is true. It is not wrong, or Anti-Semitic, to call out that truth.

Now, there is also the idea that applying a double standard to Israel may be wrong and Anti-Semitic in and of itself. That again is not an issue here. This joke was clearly in the context of making fun of a number of different groups. If anything, it normalized the Jewish and Israeli experience; the exact opposite of the accusation of double standard.

If you liked the joke, don’t just laugh. Take that energy and join any one of the myriad organizations fighting for equality in Israel. And if you didn’t like the joke, feel free to write an angry letter to Comcast, but when you’re done – join hands with the people who did laugh and fight to fix the problem. Thousands of people, Jewish and Palestinian alike, within Israel and without it are working hard to make the world a better place. Let’s thank the comedians for making us uncomfortable, and then do our part.

Former Texans QB Sage Rosenfels shares funny story about Cal McNair - Texans Wire

cucun.indah.link

People have an idea of what Houston Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair is like as a public persona and head of the franchise, but what is he like behind the scenes?

Former Texans backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels joined Michael Silver’s podcast to talk about the Texans’ boss.

“I’ve got nothing really bad to say about Cal McNair,” Rosenfels said. “He always treated me really nice. I was open to conversations with him.”

One story Rosenfels shared came from the 2006 season when he first arrived to Houston with new coach Gary Kubiak.

“One time my first year there I was talking to David Carr about this, and David had just come from Cal’s office, I think, to discuss something,” said Rosenfels, who went 6-4 as a starter in Houston from 2006-08. “I’m not sure what it was. And I hadn’t really met Cal at this point.

“I was like, ‘What’s Cal like?’

“He’s like, ‘Well, I walk into his office and he’s sitting on the floor. There’s no desk or anything and there’s this huge TV on the wall, and he’s playing video games.’

“I was like, ‘What?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah.’

“And I was like, ‘Well, I don’t know.’ And that was like my only really behind-the-curtain Cal McNair story other than he was a really nice guy and was kind of his dad’s right-hand guy sort of, and shake hands after the game.”

The Texans were still in the expansion phase of their franchise when Rosenfels was there, going 6-10 in 2006 followed up by consecutive 8-8 finishes the next two seasons.

It is unknown whether McNair still sits in his office on the floor playing video games on a flatscreen. Given the decisions that face the team as they recover from a 4-12 disappointment in 2020, it is doubtful he has much leisure time at NRG Stadium these days.

Twitter Is Not Impressed With Ted Cruz's Questionable CPAC Joke About Cancun - HuffPost

cucun.indah.link

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) began his speech at Orlando’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Friday with a quip about his controversial trip to Cancun during last week’s extreme snowstorms in Texas — and Twitter was decidedly unimpressed.

“God bless CPAC,” Cruz said to a cheering crowd. “I gotta say, Orlando is awesome. It’s not as nice as Cancun, but it’s nice.”

Over the course of his speech, Cruz also mocked Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for wearing mittens during President Joe Biden’s inauguration, made light of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) concerns about the Jan. 6 capitol insurrection, and called wearing more than one face mask as COVID-19 protection — which the CDC has found effective — “dumb.”

Cruz’s decision to joke about his trip to Cancun comes after at least two dozen people in the Houston area died due to the freezing weather and rolling blackouts across the state, including an 11-year-old boy from Conroe who was a suspected victim of hypothermia.

The senator, who claimed that he made the trip at the request of his daughters, was slammed by both sides of the political aisle for jetting to Cancun while millions of his constituents were without power. Republicans like former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said they had no sympathy for Cruz, and the Houston Chronicle’s editorial board penned a scathing piece demanding that he resign. Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, raised more than $5 million in relief for Texas affected by the storm.

Despite this, Cruz seemed willing to make light of his Cancun trip at CPAC. Social media users were quick to condemn the senator’s behavior, with some pointing out that as the senator was in Orlando, President Biden was surveying the damage in Texas.
