In 1926 Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean built a half-scale Type 35 for Ettore’s youngest son on his fourth birthday. It was supposed to be a one-off, but its reception was so positive that the Baby Bugatti went into production for nine years. This week, production of Baby Bugatti II commences in Molsheim.
Last year at the Geneva auto show Bugatti confirmed it would build 500 more Baby Bugattis for well-heeled customers looking to add to their kid’s garage.

The original was half-sized, but Baby Bugatti II will be three-quarter-sized so it can be driven by both adults and kids. Bugatti says it was “created using the latest technology, but with the utmost respect for Bugatti’s automotive heritage. Hand-built, the car was designed with the aid of a precise digital scan of an original Type 35, built for the 1924 French Grand Prix in Lyon.”
The rear-wheel-drive Baby II is powered by removable lithium-ion battery packs and features a limited-slip differential and regenerative braking. It will have two selectable power modes. One has a top speed of 12 mph and the other a top speed of 28 mph. An optional speed key upgrade raises the power output again and disengages the speed limiter. Top speed in that mode is a dicey 42 mph.
