A persistent and prolific troll was behind the hoax that drew hundreds to Gettysburg on July 4 to prevent an American flag burning that never was going to happen, The Washington Post reported Friday.
Investigative reporters for the Post said they tracked Adam Rahuba, a Pittsburgh native, to a friend’s apartment where he admitted to being behind the Gettyburg hoax and many others on social media.
For the July 4 scam at Gettysburg National Military Park, Rahuba concocted a report that an antifa group was going to torch Old Glory, the Post reported. Its reporters said that was the second time in three years that Rahuba pulled such a stunt.
“A self-described democratic socialist and supporter of former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, Rahuba said he antagonizes far-right extremists mostly for his own amusement,” the Post wrote.
The news outlet said Rashuba’s other works have included making fun of the 9/11 terror attacks and creating a fake online drive to repeal the Second Amendment. The Post reporters said he denied belonging to any formal antifa group but claimed to be a supporter of former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
