Although Searching is a serious thriller about a father (John Cho) looking for his missing daughter there are funny moments throughout the film as well. Although not a comedy by any means, there are still funny moments that cut the tension of the subject matter.
The two main characters of the 2018 thriller are played by John Cho and Debra Messing, who both have a background in comedy with the Harold and Kumar films and Will and Grace respectively so it's not surprising that there are funny moments in a thriller that stars these two. Here are some of the funniest moments throughout the movie.
10 What Is A Tumblr?
When David Kim begins to interview his daughter Margot's contacts from Facebook and her phone one at a time someone mentions that she would post to her Tumblr a lot. He hilariously asks, what's a tumbler?
He proceeds to look it up spelled the way a travel coffee tumbler is spelled, but he eventually finds her Tumblr page.
9 He's Gonna Be Fine
David goes after a young kid who claimed to be holding his daughter captive as a joke. After the case gets some publicity many of his daughter's classmates put themselves into the case although they weren't friends with her. One such kid claims that his daughter has been hiding out with him and she's fine, among other explicit remarks about her.
Fed up with everything, David goes after him in a video and claims that he is going to be fine, although Detective Vick quips that his jaw is broken. The quick comedic timing of this interaction throws the audience off a bit since it's a dark film and a dark moment for David's character.
8 A Particular Alibi
One of the people David Kim interviews about where his daughter could be is hesitant to provide an alibi and only does so after David yells at him, increasingly angry, that the kid finally provides an alibi.
The movie cuts from David on the phone to him updating his spreadsheet of people and alibis as he types in "Bieber concert - confirmed" under the alibi tab.
7 What Is Entercourse?
In the beginning montage that introduces the audience to the Kim family, Margot joins AOL chat, and her friend types out that someone told her where babies come from.
Margot minimizes the chat and searches "what is entercourse?" to figure out what her friend is talking about. It's a funny little moment showing a kid trying to Google what intercourse is.
6 You Don't Know What Pokémon Is?
In the beginning montage, David shows Margot a Pokémon shirt and tells her he got it for her and she asks what that is. It's not clear if she's making a joke and loves it already or if this is the first time he's told her about the show.
The montage cuts to her logging into her account and shows Pikachu as her background. It's a funny little moment that either shows Margot was joking with her dad or she immediately got obsessed with the show after her dad got her the shirt.
5 David's Rant To Margot
After talking to another mother and thinking Margot will be home in the morning after a camping trip, David types out a long ranting message to her with multiple capitalized words and exclamation points.
He decides to highlight the entire message, having to scroll up to select it all, and he decides to delete it all instead of sending it.
4 Playing Pong, Ping Pong
One of Margot's friends that David interviews says that on the night Margot went missing that he was done with finals and out at a friend's house playing pong.
There's a funny pause as he seems to remember he's talking to an adult and says ping pong instead of the presumed beer pong. It's a small and funny moment in the montage of David reaching out to Margot's contacts.
3 David Being Confused By YouCast
David finds Margot's YouCast account where you can post videos and vlogs of yourself and people can watch everything live. David isn't sure how the website works and he doesn't know what else to do so he asks if someone casting can see him, and the teenage kid pauses and answers that there's no way he could see someone if they're not casting.
He starts casting and has a confused look on his face when the camera turns on and Fish 'N' Chips joins the cast.
2 David's Brother Admitting To Giving Margot Weed
There's a serious moment in the thriller when David finds texts between his brother Peter and his daughter Margot and he had no idea they had a friendship. The texts are odd and some say David would kill them both if he knew what they were doing.
It leads to a tense moment where David confronts him about the texts and Peter finally tells David he was smoking with Margot. It doesn't relieve all the tension between the brothers, but it is a small funny moment amongst the tension.
1 David Going After An Internet Troll
One of Margot's supposed friends makes a crude post about how she has been with him the entire time. David figures out where the kid is and confronts him about the post. Although the audience doesn't hear what he says he probably asks him if it's true, although he's sure it's not, and the conversation gets heated as David loses his cool and starts hitting him.
Although David's dismissive tone after the fight might be the funnier moment, it is a funny moment through David's pain.
