In the early 1960’s one of my favorite television shows was The Outer Limits which had the iconic opening:
“There is nothing wrong with your set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission…For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear…”
I thought about that tonight as I was channel surfing (on regular cable) and was going past a showing of one of the Rush Hour series (it was Rush Hour 3, I believe). Before the film started there was a blurb stating that “This film has outdated attitudes, language and cultural depiction, which may cause offense today.”
Now, I knew that some films such as Gone With The Wind had “triggered” some of our most “woke” snowflakes, but Rush Hour? For that matter, Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Were there questionable lyrics in Moon River?
We aren’t just in a period of shifting cultural mores. We are heading for something similar to the Dark Ages, with thousands of humorless, little would-be Torquemadas, standing ready to tell us what and what isn’t acceptable. I don’t think I’m too far out of line in feeling that, more and more, this is beginning to be a fight for our very culture.
