Just to keep his defense guessing, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan occasionally will step in to play quarterback for the 49ers during 11-on-11 practice.
As with everything in his life, Shanahan takes it very seriously. Just ask general manager John Lynch.
"He takes a lot of pride in that," Lynch quipped to The Athletic's Tim Kawakami. "There's a segment of practice, Tim you've seen, where he plays quarterback against our defense because he wants to challenge them, and poke holes in the coverages. The mad scientist kind of meets the ex-football player.
"I'll give you a little insight, sometimes I go in his office and he's watching film, he's watching film of himself against our defense. I say come on Kyle, 'Let's move on.' "

Shanahan was a wide receiver during his playing days, catching 14 passes over two seasons for the University of Texas. But as the son of a longtime NFL head coach, few around the league have spent as much time around practices as Shanahan.
Although he's expressed the utmost confidence in Jimmy Garoppolo throughout the offseason -- even as rumors swirled about the organization looking elsewhere -- Shanahan has to test the defense on his own once in a while.
Similar to Lynch, it's unlikely we'll see Shanahan putting any pads on and trying to mix it up with his players. But he does have to keep that arm loose somehow.
