During the third season of Stranger Things, fans eagerly watched Joyce and Hopper inch closer to being an official couple than ever before through some of the biggest moments of tension ever on the show. From high school reminiscing, implied previous romance and parental bonding, it seemed as if they might finally get together, only for Joyce to condemn him to his doom in order to save the world.
Luckily, anyone who's been following spoilers for the fourth season already knows that Hop made it through, so hopefully, they will have the chance to become an item once again. In the meantime, fans can enjoy memes like these that sum up both their relationship and the show so far.
10 The Magnets
The magnets were on Joyce's mind for much of the season, and Hopper was way too wrapped up in his jealousy over Joyce's time with Mr. Clark trying to solve the magnet mayhem (not to mention his anger over his daughter becoming a teenager who wants to make out with her boyfriend) to even notice that something was going on in his town again.
The tension between the pair was palpable, but Hop really was way out of line with his anger, which makes this meme so appropriately hilarious and the perfect summation of their relationship for part of the third season.
9 Hopper The Flirt
Fans rejoiced over Hop and Joyce flirting more each season, which is a recurring theme in the show. By the third season, Jim finally managed to ask Joyce out, mustering up the courage after her boyfriend Bob, played by the adorable nerd favorite Sean Astin, was taken out. Joyce, for her part, appeared to be oblivious, even though it's obvious that the two were meant to be.
This meme pokes fun at how much Hopper really has flirted with Joyce over the span of the show, as well as how vague he's been about it, leaving Joyce to think he's just been friendly up until the point he actually asks her out.
8 Like An Old Married Couple
While Joyce and Hopper argued throughout much of the season, it not only mirrored the sexual tension between Jonathan and Nancy the previous season, which also involved Murray's commentary, but it also demonstrated how much like an old married couple they really are.
The two complement one another, act as each other's protection and sounding boards and then simply fight until it's clear that they need to make up the same way couples do. This meme may allude to four minutes, but it truly sums up the entire season given how much "Jopper" acted married during the third season.
7 Joyce's Anti-Snap
In the spring of 2019, Marvel fans experienced The Snap in a whole new way, when Tony Stark sacrificed himself to save the world. But long before that, Thanos took out his pride and joy, Gamora, in an effort to do what he believed was the same thing.
Joyce Byers obviously isn't Thanos by any means, but her choice to sacrifice someone she obviously loved for the good of mankind is much like the choice that Thanos thought he was making for the same reason. Like the Infinity Stones, Hopper was apparently "gone, reduced to atoms" at the end of the season, which is heartbreaking but also rendered funny in this meme.
6 Mr. Steal Your Girl
Everyone loves the memes about Jonathan Byers being "Mr. Steal Your Girl," and even memes that subsequently feature Billy Hargrove as "Mr. Steal Your Mom." But in the third season of the show, it's Hopper who's come to steal Bob's girl, Joyce.
To be fair, Bob's been dead for a while now, but Joyce obviously isn't over him just yet, which is why she's hesitant to date Jim, who is obviously mooning over her. That's a big theme for the third season, and this meme pokes fun at how Jim is so ready to present himself as new boyfriend material for his presumed old flame.
5 Hop's Jealous
Many fans found themselves both sad to witness Joyce stand Hopper up, as well as annoyed that Hop refused to listen to Joyce about the weird stuff going on in Hawkins again. If anything sums up the show at this point, it's that guys not listening to the women in the show when something is wrong is a recurring theme.
Rather than take Joyce's magnet issue seriously, Hopper decided to wax on about her meeting with the boys' science teacher, Scott Clarke, obviously jealous that she chose to spend the evening with him instead of meeting up with Jim, as she'd finally agreed to do. The meme is so funny because it's not actually magnets before guys, but the safety of the town.
4 Lost In Translation
Hopper has been sweet on Joyce since the first episode of the show, which explains how he treats her in every episode. As soon as he realizes that it's her waiting in his office, he sobers up and gets to work, going beyond typical small-town cop duties to the point of intimidating a man at a bar for information, being drugged and kidnapped and literally entering The Upside Down for her.
He's clearly concerned about her and Will, going as far as to give Eleven up for a chance to rescue him. Was he actually coming on to Joyce in this scene? Probably not, but it's so funny since he's clearly enamored with her.
3 Get Together Already
When Alexei learns that Hop and Joyce aren't a couple, he and Murray share a big laugh over it while Hopper and Joyce continue to share thick tension to the end of the season. It's very clear that the two should just get on with their relationship and make it romantic, rather than continue to snip at one another.
This meme illustrates not only how obvious this fact is to the fans watching, but how frustrating it is to see a couple on screen who are meant to be together, but seemingly never will be.
2 The American
At the end of the final episode of the third season, it's mentioned that the Russians are keeping an American locked up somewhere. Fans instantly hoped it was Hopper, although many claimed it was too obvious and that it might be someone else, like Dr. Brenner. Since Hop's body was never recovered, fans still held on to this hope, and like Ronan pictured in this meme, they didn't want it if it meant just being shattered again after such a heavy loss.
Spoilers for the third season have since given viewers even more hope, so hopefully, Joyce and Murray will do just what Clint did - whatever it takes to bring Hopper home.
