Eric Kripke, showrunner of Amazon Prime's hit anarchic superhero show The Boys, says his favorite joke from season 1, which unfolds over two episodes, has only just been discovered. The Amazon Prime show just debuted the first three episodes of season 2, which introduces new characters, including the incredibly powerful Stormfront (Aya Cash), alongside the cast from season 1. That ensemble includes Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell, Antony Starr as Homelander, and Erin Moriarty as Starlight.
The Boys is a violent, bloody takedown of typical superhero shows, featuring a number of recognizable superhuman characters, but all with deep personality flaws. The show's sweary blend of action and humor was a hit with fans, and season 2 looks set to up the ante if the trailer and first three episodes released on Friday are anything to go by. And the emotional stakes are upped too, following the season 1 revelation that Homelander fathered a son with Butcher's wife, whom he had assumed was dead for the past few years.
Now, Twitter user @RemainsOfTheJay has found an in-joke in The Boys that showrunner Kripke says no one has pointed out before. The tweet shows that a comment Butcher makes about vans with flowers on the side in episode 3 pays off hilariously in episode 8, when he realizes Vought's goons have caught up with The Boys because a van with flowers on the side is parked outside their hideout. Kripke says it's the first time someone has pointed out the joke to him, and that it's one of his favorites. You can see the tweets below.
While it's certainly not the first time someone has actually noticed the joke, it's clear Kripke is ecstatic that someone has finally mentioned it to him. Admittedly, it's a tough one to find, given you'd need to remember the comment in the third episode in order for the joke to pay off in the season 1 finale, but the reward is worth it. The attention to detail illustrated here is one of the things that makes The Boys so popular.
Hopefully, there's more where that came from in season 2 of The Boys, given the rich and detailed characters the show has already created. The new batch of episodes will need to keep the quality high in order to meet the expectations fans have for the show following season 1, but the first three episodes that have been released seem to indicate there's very little chance fans will be let down.
