The Nationals got cocky.
The reigning World Champs were feeling awfully confident last week, flaunting their recent success over Philadelphia with this low blow of a tweet.
Clearly the Nationals are not familiar with the adage “don’t poke the bear.” Equipped with a wealth of bulletin-board material, the Phillies have quickly turned the tables on Washington, winning five straight against their division rival while outscoring the Nats by an overwhelming 28-11 margin during that span.
The Nationals, who have sunk to the bottom of the NL East with a listless 12-22 record (fourth-worst in the majors behind only the Angels, Pirates and Red Sox), have had a particularly tough go of it in Philly this week, entering Thursday’s action in the midst of an 18-inning scoreless drought. Even three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer couldn’t stop the bleeding, failing to match Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, who fanned six over 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball Wednesday at Citizen’s Bank Park.
Whether it’s pure happenstance that Washington has crumbled of late while the scorching-hot Phillies have soared to juggernaut status or a deliberate act of sabotage carried out by a vengeful and all-knowing baseball god, I’m betting the Nationals will think twice before sending any future tweets about their opponents. Considering how poorly it aged, last week’s unprompted jab at Philly probably should have stayed in the drafts folder.
