Beetlejuice has long been a favorite Tim Burton film among audiences. It stars Michael Keaton as the legendary titular character, and he plays the role well. He's witty, he's sarcastic, he's got an unforgettable personality, and he's definitely eccentric.
Beetlejuice has his fair share of comedic moments, but sometimes Beetlejuice could be quite cruel, especially when it came to his scare tactics. He was insistent and pushy, and he liked doing things his way -- which didn't work out so well for him, though audiences did get a few laughs along the way.
10 FUNNY: Kicking The Tree & Swearing
Beetlejuice is miffed that Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam (Alec Baldwin) left their meeting with him early, and obviously takes it personally. The funny thing about this is that he claims they're "Working with a professional here!," though it's far from professional when he subsequently kicks over a nearby tree.
This -- and his hilariously angry rant that included some swearing -- is a sign that Beetlejuice wasn't stable and couldn't be trusted under any circumstance but unfortunately for Adam, Barbara and the Deetz family, they hadn't seen the last of him.
9 PLAIN MEAN: Eating The Fly
Not only is this particular instance incredibly disgusting, but it's pretty brutal. Beetlejuice is under the cemetery in the Maitlands' model up in the attic, and all the audience sees are his hands as he beckons the poor fly towards him, tempting him with food in the form of a Zagnut.
The poor fly screeches "help me!" more than once as he's pulled into the hole, where it's ultimately eaten by Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice obviously had the Zagnut, so why not eat that instead?
8 FUNNY: Test Your Strength!
When Lydia (Winona Ryder) summons Beetlejuice to save Barbara and Adam, the first thing he does is appear right in the middle of the model, circus-ready, and immediately starts off with a bit to "test your strength." It doesn't work out well for Maxie Dean, Charles' former boss, and his wife, as they're propelled through the roof thanks to Beetlejuice's act.
It's not shown what happened to the couple afterwards but they probably never enjoyed the circus again, much less agreed to Charles' plan to turn the town into a tourist trap.
7 PLAIN MEAN: Scaring Barbara & Adam
Granted, Adam asked Beetlejuice if he was capable of being scary to which he obliged. But Beetlejuice took things too far, making the husband and wife scream their heads off upon pulling a nasty trick.
The audience doesn't see his face like Adam and Barbara do, but it's easy to imagine how horrible it is given their reactions. Beetlejuice could have simply answered "Yes" and threw in a snide remark or two rather than traumatizing his potential clients. It's no wonder Adam and Barbara didn't want to do business with him!
6 FUNNY: Flirting With Barbara
While definitely inappropriate considering Beetlejuice was harassing Barbara, it's also funny because of how disgusted she is with him and how persistent he is in turn. He even has the audacity to ask Adam if he's got a shot with Barbara at all. She's already happily married and even if she weren't, it's doubtful Barbara would've fallen for Beetlejuice anyway.
He kisses her without permission, he flirts with her, and he even tries to look up her dress. Beetlejuice has no boundaries, but this is part of his character's overall comedy and raunchy appeal.
5 PLAIN MEAN: Not Caring About Lydia's Struggle
Lydia meets Beetlejuice in the attic at her darkest point, after she's written a farewell letter and expresses a desire to die. Beetlejuice does ask why, but he's not too hung up on Lydia's reasoning. Instead, as usual, he's more focused on himself, wanting something from Lydia instead of trying to convince her to keep on living.
That task is left to Barbara and Adam, who were better suited to talk to Lydia anyway when compared to Bettlejuice, who was a curious ghost at best. Still, this moment in time shows how selfish and awful Beetlejuice can really be.
4 FUNNY: Reassuring Himself Of His Impending Marriage
During his wedding ceremony to Lydia, Beetlejuice steps out for a second and has a little talk with himself regarding what he's about to do. He contemplates over the fact that marriage is a big life-changing decision and that if he was to ever get hitched, he was only going to do it once.
Despite such deep thoughts and a rare moment of sincere reflection from the eccentric ghost, it doesn't take Beetlejuice long to go ahead and marry someone he doesn't even know -- let alone someone who isn't in full approval of the marriage to begin with (more on that later).
3 PLAIN MEAN: That Time He Turned Into A Snake
Beetlejuice claims he was just doing his job in getting rid of the Deetz family from Adam and Barbara's home, but this was a dangerous and cruel trick nonetheless.
Not only does he essentially scare the living daylights out of the aforementioned family and Otho, but he could have seriously hurt them in his monstrous snake form. Especially Charles, whom he dropped from the second floor head-first. He may want to join the mortal world, but Beetlejuice clearly has no respect for mortal life.
2 FUNNY: Conjuring The Inferno Room
After being called back by Barbara following the snake incident, Beetlejuice winds up back in the model, feeling "anxious," as he puts it. There's nothing like a good scare to get Beetlejuice in the mood for some action from the opposite sex, which is apparent in the "Inferno Room" in the model, featuring music, dancing and plenty of girls.
Naturally, Adam didn't build such a thing -- it's an original creation of Beetlejuice's mind, or in this case, his desires.
1 PLAIN MEAN: Forcing Lydia To Marry Him
Lydia didn't have much choice, wanting to save Barbara and Adam who were clearly disintegrating. Feeling she had no other resources, she turned to Beetlejuice to save them and agreed to his condition of marriage. The thing is, Beetlejuice never should've made her go through with it, let alone force her to make the commitment to begin with.
Lydia is still a child and was in no way ready for marriage, especially to someone like Beetlejuice. The only person he cared for was himself, so of course Beetlejuice forced her into marriage just for his own sake and freedom.
