
A contributor to Reddit this month went on something of a bender. Using the handle “thegentlemetre”, the writer weighed in on hundreds of threads on the popular online forum, from “What is your greatest accomplishment?” to how to get even with a former employer. On the latter, thegentlemetre offered: “If the former employee is not afraid of being charged with a crime, then they could steal from the company or assault its employees.”
The writer could be witty and philosophical, exacting or meandering. And it was a bot, albeit one powered by the most sophisticated text-generating AI in the world: a program called GPT-3.
