When Sam Ehlinger stood on a stage in New Orleans and proclaimed to the world that Texas was back, he likely had no idea that he was about to become a meme that the college football world would use to mock the Longhorns in future seasons. But flash forward to today and it’s impossible to count how many times the meme has been used.
When he yelled that on ESPN, Ehlinger and the Longhorns had just beaten Georgia, 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl and capped off a 10-4 campaign. But since then, things have not gone well for Texas and it certainly doesn’t look “back.” After suffering their second straight loss this season, the Longhorns got mocked by ESPN.
The official ESPN Twitter account joined in on the bashing by tweeting the famous picture of Ehlinger and then a second one from Saturday’s loss to the Oklahoma Sooners. ESPN used the caption, “how it started,” for the first picture and then “how it’s going” for the second one, as seen below.

The bashing of Texas has been easy for rival fans based on how the last 17 games have gone since Ehlinger made his famous comments after the Sugar Bowl. The Longhorns went 8-5 in 2019, including a stretch where they lost four of six games and things have gotten off to a rocky start in 2020. Texas is 2-2 after losses to TCU and Oklahoma in consecutive weeks. The Longhorns’ lone Big 12 win came in overtime against Texas Tech, a game that they trailed by double digits late.
There could be some hope for Texas moving forward, though, despite having two straight losses. The Longhorns trailed the Sooners by 14 points coming into the fourth quarter of the game, but Ehlinger threw two touchdown passes in the quarter to force overtime. Ehlinger continued to battle in the overtime portion of the game, carrying the game into a fourth overtime before Oklahoma won the game.
If the Longhorns play like they did down the stretch moving forward, they could turn things around on what has been a tough 2020 season so far. And they’ll have plenty of time to do so, as they’ll be off this coming weekend before hosting Baylor on October 24.
“We showed the football team we are at the end when we stay out of our own way — when we don’t have penalties and a lot of different mistakes that are self-inflicted,” Ehlinger said, according to ESPN. “It’s unfortunate, and we’ve got to get better.
“…We have the talent; that's not the issue. We have the schemes; that’s not the issue. We always seem to be tripping ourselves up. Getting in our own way, making mistakes at crucial times, and the best teams don’t do that.”
