Ryan Reynolds Explains Why It’s Important He Jokes About Green Lantern - Screen Rant

Ryan Reynolds explains the need for him to make fun of Green Lantern and his experience working on it. After his first outing as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine resulted in a catastrophe, the Canadian actor tried his luck playing a different superhero role with DC's Hal Jordan. Unfortunately, even that ended up being a massive disappointment.

Released in 2011, Green Lantern was directed by Martin Campbell and debuted Reynolds as the titular hero. The film had a decent ensemble cast with Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, Mark Strong as Sinestro, Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller, Temuera Morrison as Abin Sur, and Taika Waititi as Thomas Kalmaku, but it was panned by both critics and fans. Over the years, the film has been the butt of many jokes in the comic book movie community, with Reynolds regularly taking a shot at it.

When asked while doing press for his latest project (via ComicBook), Free Guy, why he makes fun of the project despite being a part of it, the actor reveals it has nothing to do with being mean-spirited. Reynolds explains the need for him to joke about Green Lantern stems from wanting to be able to look back at his career and not be too caught up with projects that didn't pan out as he wanted them to be.

"I wrote it into the Deadpool script, I think where my character says something like, 'Please don't make this suit green or animated,' when he's being shoved into the superhero factory or whatever. And I noticed that it felt good to shine a light on that for a second. So I don't know, it's just something I've always done, but the most significant thing that's ever happened in my career is laughing at myself always. Like, since the start of the work. And there's plenty there to laugh at ... Everybody has their own, you lay in bed at night and you think, 'Oh God, this thing I did was so awful or silly or ridiculous.' I think that's got this fuel for lots of stuff."

Thanks to The Merc With A Mouth's ability to break the fourth wall and penchant for edgy jokes in general, Reynolds even snuck in one or two shots at Green Lantern in his Deadpool films. More recently, he and Waititi poked fun at their shared experience, pretending they don't remember the project at all while promoting Free Guy. Given their reunion project, it's curious if they've also incorporated some jabs at the Warner Bros and DC Films project in the new film — fans would have to wait to find out with the movie not rolling out (hopefully in theaters) until the end of the year.

Since Reynolds found his signature role in Deadpool, he has been more explicit about his ability to laugh at himself and his failures, and being in a high-pressured industry, this type of mindset is necessary to cope with failures. If anything, the actor doesn't only zero in on Green Lantern for his self-deprecating jokes; he has also taken shots, and even more frequently at his first foray as Wade Wilson.
