The only thing better than the 2020 U.S. presidential election finally being over are the online reactions. Democratic contender Joe Biden is projected to be the next president of the United States, with Kamala Harris as the next vice president — and the weekend was flooded with resounding celebrations across the country, both online and off.
After a tumultuous year of COVID-19, murder hornets, and the election, social media users took some time to rejoice in good news. In the complete antithesis of doomscrolling, the internet came together to crank out their best jokes for the entire world wide web to enjoy. And given the importance of social distancing, firing up the old Twitter dot com was one way to be with a community while staying safe.
From mistaken hotel bookings to Disney Channel throwbacks, the internet had quite the time this weekend. Here are the memes and moments you may have missed.
A Debacle at Four Seasons Total Landscaping
In one of the more joyous moments of 2020: the Trump campaign team booked the wrong Four Seasons for a big press conference in Philadelphia. Instead of the luxury hotel chain, they gathered at a store called Four Seasons Total Landscaping, which is sandwiched between a crematorium and an adult store. Naturally, Twitter exploded into some long needed laughter at the Trump team’s expense.
All Roads Lead Back to Disney Channel
“Party in the U.S.A.” re-entered the U.S. iTunes charts this weekend as people celebrated the Biden/Harris victory. But that wasn’t the only Disney Channel-infused joke moment. One person pulled a screenshot from an iconic episode of Hannah Montana, in which Jake Ryan brags about his connections and asserts, “And that’s when I said, ‘No Mr. Trump, you’re fired.’” Elsewhere, people made excellent use of the “T as in Troy” meme from High School Musical.
The Hits Just Kept on Coming
Not to state the obvious, but Trump’s projected loss after a long four years is exactly what the world needed to end the year.
Betsy DeVos’s Decline
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was undoubtedly one of the more alarming parts of the Trump administration. The forthcoming end to her reign is as much cause to celebrate as any other, as many have already pointed out.
Pop Crave for the Win
Waiting for election results was… an experience, and not a particularly calming one. Pop Crave broke the ice by being among the first to call the election results, creating a fun pop culture moment from an outlet known for reporting fun pop culture moments. When the history books write about this election, Pop Crave may just get a footnote.
A Welcome (Back) Into the White House
President-elect Joe Biden received the most votes of any candidate in American history so it would be an understatement to say that Americans wanted him in the White House (or, at least, wanted Donald Trump out). There was no shortage of celebrations for Biden's return.
