Isla Fisher jokes that a cut joke from Borat Subsequent Moviefilm almost ended her marriage with Sacha Baron Cohen. Fisher, who stars in the new Disney+ Christmas comedy movie Godmothered, married Cohen back in 2010. As the spouse of the Borat actor, Fisher has had to put up with many of Cohen's antics and outrageous pranks through the years. However, Fisher has stayed by Cohen's side through all of his controversial characters and often life-threatening scenes, even visiting him on set and getting involved in the editing process.
In one particularly shocking scene in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Borat and his 15-year-old daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova) attend a debutante ball in Georgia, where the father-daughter pair perform a synchronized "traditional fertility dance" on the ballroom floor in front of the other attendees. In a hilariously graphic moment, Tutar lifts up her dress during the dance and flashes her "moon blood" to the horrified guests. While the attendees in the scene reportedly knew the ball was being filmed, they were paid $100 to perform as extras in what they were told was a a coming-of-age movie. The dance gag was a surprise, leading many of them to storm out of the ballroom. It turns out that another joke was originally planned to be in the scene, and Fisher really rallied for her husband to keep it in.
During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday, Fisher reveals that she became very involved in the Borat sequel and recalls Cohen cutting her favorite joke from the ball scene. Fisher jokes she wanted him to keep the bit in so much that she threatened she would never speak to him again if he cut it. Read Fisher's full comment below:
I like to be involved. I watch all the cuts of the movie. I mean, I’m sure my husband will tell you I get a little too opinionated. There was actually a joke in this one, in this latest Borat one, in the debutante ball scene that I just found so funny, it’s my favorite joke, I was so attached to it. And it was in the foreign cut and it was in all the cuts and then finally when it comes to the last minute in the edit — he takes it out! And I was like, ‘Babe, you gotta put this joke back in! This is so funny, this is my favorite joke.’ And he’s like explaining to me that for the pathos that it’s really important that there’s not a joke in this moment and he didn’t feel that the joke was that original. And I’m getting more and more heated up… I somehow ended up saying the phrase, ‘I won’t ever speak to you again unless you put this joke back in.’ And anyway, he cut it out. And we’re still married.
However, Fisher admitted that looking back on the scene, Cohen made the right call in cutting the joke. Though she did not reveal what the joke was, she explained, "It does make another joke work even more. You know what it’s like, sometimes you go for a chuckle when you need to wait and get a big laugh."
It's certainly no surprise that Fisher's favorite bit was during the ball scene. There were so many iconic moments in Borat 2, but the traditional fertility dance was the same kind of shock value that felt similar to scenes in the original Borat. It would be interesting to find out what Fisher's favorite joke was that got cut and how it would have made the scene turn out different. It's also been revealed since the movie's release that many scenes ended up on the cutting room floor due to the plot consistently changing with the events of the coronavirus pandemic and the presidential campaign.
