Cyberpunk 2077's Subtle (But Funny) The Office Joke Explained - Screen Rant

CD Projekt Red has paid homage to The Office by slipping a joke from the show into Cyberpunk 2077The Office, an American remake of the British series by the same name, was a wildly popular sitcom during its 2005-2013 run, and apparently the folks at Cyberpunk 2077's Polish development studio enjoyed the show, too.

Set up as a mockumentary, The Office chronicled the daily lives of employees working for a surprisingly interesting paper company. Streaming services have only heightened its popularity, especially among those who were too young to appreciate the show when it originally aired. Players hoping to find one of Jim Halpert's many pranks in Cyberpunk 2077 will be disappointed, though, as the game shies away from cellphones in ceilings and false recruitments to the CIA, and Cyberpunk's The Office reference doesn't stem from Steve Carrell's infamous Michael Scott, either.

Instead, The Office joke found in Cyberpunk 2077 belongs to a side character who didn't have a speaking part until season six of the series. Though he had few lines in the show, die-hard fans will remember warehouse worker Hidetoshi Hasagawa, commonly referred to as Hide. Early in episode 21, "Happy Hour," former warehouse foreman and current office employee Darryl Philbin mentions Hide has an amazing story. The particular joke Cyberpunk 2077 references then plays out, with Hide addressing the mocumentary team.

How Cyberpunk 2077 References The Office's Hide Hasagawa

Hide explains he was the number-one heart surgeon in Japan when a Yakuza boss came in needing surgery. Hide says there was a mistake, and the Yakuza boss died on the table. To escape the angry gangs, he hid on a boat and made his way to Scranton, where Daryll hired him. So, what's the joke Cyberpunk 2077 just couldn't pass up? Hide reveals he killed the Yakuza boss on purpose, saying, "I good surgeon. The best!," and giving the camera two thumbs up.

In Cyberpunk 2077, a mission called Big In Japan sends the player to find a man who was smuggled in a cargo shipment. Players must escort the man through gang territory without allowing him to be harmed. It turns out he was a surgeon who operated on the Tyger Claw gang boss, who died on the table. Clearly, the Tyger Claw gang was a little miffed and tried to have the surgeon killed. The Cyberpunk 2077 surgeon then tells the player, "But there is a secret - I kill Tyger Claw boss on purpose. World best surgeon make no mistake!" This near-word-for-word repetition of Hide's classic reveal in The Office is a subtle Easter egg, paying tribute to what is arguably the best sitcom of its generation.
