Last Friday, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis made their red carpet debut along with their parents Kate Middleton and Prince William when the family traveled to the Palladium in London to take part in the theater’s long-running holiday pantomime tradition. The family was on hand to attend a special performance of Pantoland put on for frontline workers and their families, and on Tuesday, Kate and William’s Twitter account shared footage from their trip. The couple’s narration that draws inspiration from the Christmas poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” which features the famous first couplet, “'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house / Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”
“’Twas two weeks before Christmas,” William said, “and all through the land, key workers kept working to help give us a hand.”
“The nurses and doctors at the heart of the fight joined teachers, shop workers, and volunteers in their plight,” Kate added. “So together with others we set on a mission to do something special in the best Christmas tradition.”
The video shows the children of frontline workers being interviewed about their favorite toys by actors playing elves, and reveals that the show ended with surprise gifts provided by the National Lottery and toy store Hamleys. “The guests never guessed that during the show,” said William, “the elves had worked quickly all covered in snow.”
So while George, Charlotte, and Louis didn’t receive any gifts, photos from the show prove that they did enjoy themselves. According to Nigel Havers, one of the show’s actors, William and Kate said they did enjoy most of the humor. In an essay for the Daily Mail, he wrote that the couple visited the actors backstage during the shows intermission, and brought up a humorous moment with his son. “Prince William had us all chuckling when he said that his eldest, George, had innocently enquired why everyone was laughing at one of Julian Clary’s more risque jokes,” he wrote in. “He said it may take him a while to explain his way out of that one!”
Despite the success of Friday’s program, Pantoland is shutting down after its final performance today, due to a new order requiring all London theaters to close after a rise in coronavirus cases in the area.
