Ryan Reynolds uses a new promo for the home release of The Croods: A New Age as an opportunity to sell his gin to parents watching with their kids. Reynolds is reprising the voice role of Guy in the sequel to the 2013 hit, which also featured the vocal talents of Nicolas Cage (Grug), Emma Stone (Eep), Catherine Keener (Ugga), Cloris Leachman (Gran), and Clark Duke (Thunk). The voice cast returned for the sequel, adding Peter Dinklage (Phil), Leslie Mann (Hope), and Kelly Marie Tran (Dawn), who play the Bettermans, a more evolved family who are living a seemingly idyllic life thanks to their superior intellect.
Despite getting delayed multiple times, and finally releasing in the middle of the pandemic on November 25, The Croods: A New Age managed to do well in its first weekend at the box office. It outgrossed Christopher Nolan's Tenet in its first weekend domestically, pulling in $9.7 million. The audiences who were willing to risk watching the movie in theaters responded well to the sequel, which pits the Croods against the new family, the Bettermans, who are more evolved than the first family. As part of new release windows due to the pandemic, the movie will debut in homes this coming Friday.
Reynolds used a promo for the home release of The Croods: A New Age as a chance to sell his Aviation gin. The typically hilarious spot features Reynolds talking about how he definitely wouldn't sell gin while promoting a kid's movie, all the while doing just that. He does suggest the kids watching should drink some juice but that parents might enjoy mixing the two, referencing the classic Snoop Dogg song. You can watch his "special message for all the mommies and daddies" below:
The video is yet another one of Reynolds' off-center commercials, made by his own production company. In the past, he's produced spots for everyone from Match.com to Hugh Jackman's coffee company, as well as his gin and mobile provider brands, Aviation and Mint. The concept here is more straightforward, but Reynolds' trademark sarcastic humor is on display, hinting that parents everywhere are going to need a drink after being forced to watch yet another animated movie over the holidays.
With several family-friendly movies releasing over the next two weeks, including Pixar's Soul on Disney+ and Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max on Christmas Day, it will be interesting to see if The Croods: A New Age can compete. The movie's home release date was initially planned for Christmas Day but moved up a week to give it more of a chance rather than competing directly with two big studio films.
