In this modern take of Charles Dickens’ 'A Christmas Carol,' 'Scrooged' is about Frank Cross, who is a wildly successful TV executive whose cold ambition and curmudgeonly nature has driven away the love of his life, Claire Phillips.
But after firing a staff member, on Christmas Eve, Frank is visited by a series of ghosts who give him a chance to re-evaluate his actions and right the wrongs of his past.
'Scrooged; is one of many modern takes of the 'Christmas Carol' story that have been released over the past few decades. This 1988 movie delivers some very humorous moments that mainly come from the often hilarious Bill Murray. Murray really did a great job in this movie, even at times when his character is supposed to be mean-spirited.
Carol Kane, the actress who portrays the Ghost of Christmas Present, was the movie's scene-stealer. Most of the Christmas Present scenes featuring the character are really funny and it even looks like the actress had a fun time beating up Bill Murray in the movie during some of her scenes. There are also a few moments that can be a little emotional (mainly a few moments where the Frank Cross character encounters the ghosts). This twist of the Charles Dickens’ classic is very entertaining and can be quite memorable.
The cast: Bill Murray as Frank Cross, Karen Allen as Claire Phillips, John Forsythe as Lew Hayward, John Glover as Brice Cummings, David Johansen as Ghost of Christmas Past, Carol Kane as Ghost of Christmas Present, Robert Mitchum as Preston Rhinelander, Alfre Woodward as Grace Cooley and Bobcat Goldthwait as Eliot Loudermilk.
'Scrooged' is written by Mitch Glazer (Rock the Kasbah; The Recruit) and Michael O’Donoghue and directed by Richard Donner (the Lethal Weapon movies; 16 Blocks).
'Scrooged' was the first big movie for Bill Murray since 'Ghostbusters,' after the actor took a little break from acting after the 1984 movie. The movie featured numerous cameos from Lee Majors, Miles Davis, John Houseman, Robert Goulet and from Bill Murray’s brothers.
Since the movie’s release in November 1988, 'Scrooged' has become a cult classic and a Christmas classic, being regularly shown on TV during the holiday period. The movie also made in some magazine publications 'Best' holiday/Christmas film lists.
During its initial release, the 1988 movie earned favorable reviews from critics. 'Scrooged' grossed roughly $60 million at the domestic box office.
'Scrooged' is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 101 minutes.
