Parks & Recreation has many hidden jokes that require a rewatch to be appreciated, and among those is one that makes Jeremy Jamm even more of an idiot – here’s what it is. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, Parks & Recreation debuted on NBC in 2009 and lived on for a total of seven seasons, coming to an end in 2015. Parks & Recreation had a rough start, and season 1 isn’t exactly the best, but the writers eventually found the right tone for the show and subsequent seasons were better received, with the series becoming a fan-favorite.
Parks & Recreation followed the daily lives of eternal optimist Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her friends and coworkers from the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Viewers saw Leslie go from Deputy Director of the Pawnee City Department of Parks and Recreation to Governor of Indiana and quite possibly President of the United States, but the road to that wasn’t easy. Leslie met a variety of people – both good and not-so-good – and went through all types of obstacles, including the uncomfortable experience of being recalled from City Council, and it was during that time that she had to deal with Councilman Jeremy Jamm (Jon Glaser).
Jamm was an orthodontist and councilman who enjoyed messing with Leslie and annoying her, which wasn’t that hard as Jamm wasn’t exactly a delightful person. He used his signature phrase “you just got Jammed” every time he felt he had one-upped his opponent, no matter who it was, and all his decisions as councilman were moved by corruption, as he only cared about maintaining a certain image and boosting his career as an orthodontist. Like any other character in Parks & Recreation, Jamm had his own quirks, and he shared many times throughout the series that he was a big fan of Asian culture, particularly everything Chinese, but he wasn’t that big of a fan – or, at least, he wasn’t a man who paid much attention to details.
In Parks & Recreation season 6 episode “The Cones of Dunshire”, Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe) and Leslie ended up at Jamm’s place to confront him as she wanted to make sure that Pawnee Commons happened. Jamm made Chris and Leslie stay under the promise that they would discuss that issue in the morning, and the next day he, while wearing Chinese-style clothing, prepared an “authentic Japanese breakfast” for them that consisted of scrambled eggs, but made in an authentic Benihana table. While that’s ironic enough for someone like Jamm – who once said he loved “Chinese crap” like Lucy Liu, Nintendo (which is Japanese), Gangnam Style (South Korean), and sushi (also Japanese) – the detail that makes him even more of an idiot is the poster that can be seen behind him, which is written in Kanji (Japanese) and reads “North Korea”.
Jeremy Jamm wasn’t the brightest citizen of Pawnee but he wasn’t its most polite either, and this whole “I love everything Chinese” situation only accentuates how much of an idiot he was, as he was not only mixing everything up yet claiming to be an expert, but he was also committing cultural appropriation – but on a brighter side, it's also a great example of the attention to detail of the production team of Parks & Recreation. Jamm even ended up working at a hibachi restaurant in Florida, as revealed in a deleted scene from the Parks & Recreation finale, and it’s highly unlikely he learned how to be a decent person.
