DC's Future State Turns The Legion of Doom Into a Joke - Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Justice League #1

If the Justice League are the greatest heroes of the DC Universe, then the Legion of Doom are its greatest villains - at least, they’re supposed to be. The Legion may have been the antithesis to the Justice League in the past, but in DC’s Future State, the new Legion of Doom turns out to be little more than a joke.

The original Legion of Doom was founded by Lex Luthor and consisted of some of the Justice League’s greatest adversaries. Future State: Justice League #1 shows that the Legion still exists in DC’s future, albeit with new members. An elderly T.O. Morrow and Professor Ivo seem to be calling the shots, with Cobalt Blue and the Flood adding a couple more familiar faces to the team. There’s also Despera, daughter of longtime DC villain Despero, Amaz-X, a new version of Amazo, the Screech Owl from Batman’s Court of Owls, and an UltraViolet Lantern. As impressive as the new Legion’s roster may seem, they don’t exactly live up to the hype.

Future State: Justice League #1 opens with T.O. Morrow discussing his latest plan with the rest of the Legion. “Lex and his Legion failed to kill the Justice League because of his obsession with power,” Morrow says, “We are different…During my research in the Hall of Justice, I uncovered a bit of hubris and mercy from the League’s past we can use to doom their future.” Morrow is referring to the existence of the Hyperclan, a team of powerful white martians who fought against the original Justice League years ago. They’ve been absent from the DC Universe since the ‘90s, but thanks to the new Legion of Doom, the Hyperclan make a bloody return in Future State. Unfortunately for Morrow and the Legion, the plan seriously backfires.

On the page after Morrow unveils his plan to kill the Justice League, the heroes find the entire Legion dead in the Hall of Justice. Superman insists that “the Legion of Doom weren’t pushovers,” but from the reader’s perspective, the villains were no more than a red herring. While this moment has great shock value, it is somewhat disappointing that the League’s longtime rivals were reduced to a joke. Granted, it's implied that the new Legion had already clashed with DC's future Justice League a number of times before this story took place, but those battles will be left to the imagination.

There is a possibility that the Legion’s death in this issue was simply a ruse. For all we know, they may still be alive, secretly pulling the strings behind the scenes, but that seems unlikely. Since the Hyperclan admits to killing them at the end of the issue, it seems that DC’s new Legion of Doom was doomed from the start.
