Pixar's Soul was such a rousing success because many critics saw it as the culmination of the studio's creative efforts up to that point. It has whimsical animation that draws viewers in immediately, a story that's narratively easy-to-follow but hints at complex concepts, and spectacular voice performances that easily evoke a range of emotions from its audience.
In terms of how funny it is versus how sad it is, it has humor that's just as hilarious as anything from the Toy Story franchise, but it has scenes of sentimentality on par with those from Up and Inside Out. This bittersweet balance leads to some truly memorable moments that have to be discussed further.
10 Sad: Connie Decides To Quit Band
Connie is one of Joe's students, and it's established in Soul's opening scene that she's a very gifted trombone player. That makes it surprisingly sad when she shows up at her teacher's doorstep discouraged and ready to quit band practice.
Thankfully, 22 is inspired by Connie's playing and is able to convince her not to give up, in a scene integral to the film's overall message about living and following your dreams.
9 Funny: 22's Previous Mentors
22 has had a new mentor once a week for thousands of years, which means the Jerrys have unsurprisingly had to call on several historical figures — from Mother Teresa to Nicholas Copernicus — in order to help her find her spark.
The scenes of 22 tormenting her mentors of some of the funniest in the film: Abraham Lincoln becomes furious after finding out Andrew Jackson is on the $20 dollar bill, Carl Jung pleads with her to "stop talking — my unconscious mind hates you!" and Mother Teresa tells her "I like everyone ... except you."
8 Sad: Joe Talks With His Mother
Joe's talk with his mother is particularly sad because it's one he's avoided having for so long.
Finally being offered the chance to become a jazz musician has given him the confidence necessary to confront her over not supporting his dream. But the way the film presents it, neither one is the villain of the situation — and that's one of the things that makes their confrontation so tear-jerking.
7 Funny: The Knicks Lose Another One
One of the best gags in Soul comes when 22 and Joe are exploring "the Zone". Noticing a basketball player about to make a game-winning dunk, 22 hits him and the scene cuts to a commentator announcing "and the Knicks lose another one!"
Even Knicks fans were able to find the humor in this lighthearted jab at the team's performance, especially considering its writer Kemp Powers is a Knicks fan himself.
6 Sad: 22 Becomes A Lost Soul
22 losing her purpose may be a fairly formulaic third-act conflict, but it hits harder in Soul than it would in lesser films.
Because we've spent so much time seeing the character learn how to love life (finding her "spark", as it were), seeing her give it all up is pretty disheartening.
5 Funny: You Can't Crush A Soul Here
Another great moment that comes courtesy of 22 is when she's going to the "Hall of Everything" with Joe.
They witness a piece of the Great Before's landscape fall on a group of souls, which shocks Joe until 22 reveals that everyone's OK. In a moment of witticism, she remarks that "you can't crush a soul here — that's what life on Earth is for."
4 Sad: Joe Plays The Piano
After his successful performance with the Dorothea Williams Quartet, Joe finds that he still feels unfulfilled for some reason.
Looking at each of the objects 22 collected during her time on Earth, he sets them each on his piano and begins to play a somber and introspective melody. Many fans agree that it perfectly encapsulates the film's somewhat melancholy tone.
3 Funny: The Barbershop Scene
Joe's visit to the barbershop is one of the best scenes in the entire movie overall, and a big part of that is on the basis of its humor.
Seeing 22 demand a lollipop and then immediately switch to waxing eloquent about life's purpose shows that she still has somewhat of a disconnect. However, at least she's getting better at socializing and learning about humanity in general. It's also sidesplittingly funny.
2 Sad: Joe Gives 22 Her Badge Back
After making it back to the Great Before, Joe realizes that 22 truly is ready to live life on Earth.
He saves her from becoming a lost soul and then gives her back her badge. Though he knows he can't go back with her, he offers to accompany her as far as he can.
1 Funny: Distracting Terry
Soul ends on a happy note overall, as the Jerrys are inspired by Joe's actions and decide to give him a second chance at life.
To do this, however, they have to distract Terry and alter the count to keep her from finding out there's a lost soul, which ends up making for one of the film's funniest visual gags.
