The Jacksonville Jaguars head coach officially announced his staff earlier in the week. There’s already been one resignation.
Meyer decided to hire former Iowa Hawkeyes strength coach Chris Doyle, who left the program following allegations of harassment and racism. The former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach said he personally “vetted” Doyle and was comfortable with the hire. However, Meyer faced significant criticism for the move and Doyle resigned on Friday night.
“Chris did not want to be a distraction to what we are building in Jacksonville. We are responsible for all aspects of our program and, in retrospect, should have given greater consideration to how his appointment may have affected all involved,” Meyer said in a release.
The NFL is not college football, where the elite coaches have few people – if any – to answer to. That is not the case in the National Football League, where coaches have owners along with a more-consistent media presence to deal with.
One sports columnist is already ripping Meyer, saying he will be a failure in the NFL.
“What Meyer did on Thursday, however, was so stupid and awful that it should cost him his job before he even runs his team through a single warmup.
He’s done. D. O. N. E. Done,” Andy Nesbitt of For The Win wrote.
It’s probably a little early to be making predictions like that, but it’s clear that Meyer has an adjustment to make at the professional level.
