With every new detail released from Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League, somewhere on the internet, a Joker meme dies.
First, Snyder pretty much killed the “we live in a society” meme, by having Jared Leto’s angst-ridden Joker repeat the line, earnestly, in a reference that seemed suspiciously self-aware for a guy who loves to pack his Superman movies with extremely on-the-nose Jesus metaphors.
But comparing one-dimensional comic book characters to Jesus Christ seems to be Snyder’s trademark, as a new image in Vanity Fair shows a new side to Batman’s beloved nemesis.
Shot in black and white, the new photo shows the Joker dressed as Jesus, his hands raised up to the heavens.
Now, Leto’s Joker was never a particularly subtle interpretation of the character; a forehead tattoo advertising his “damaged” personality was considered to be ridiculous, even for a supervillain as meticulously concerned with his brand imagery as the Joker.
But even the idea of the Joker spending hours in a tattoo salon, flipping through their selection of clown-related imagery, choosing a font in which to write “hahahaha,” and applying the correct creams to his skin during the healing process, isn’t as unintentionally hilarious as a literal crown of thorns.
Satirical memes that mock self-serious interpretations of the Joker cannot outdo what Snyder has accomplished, as the director pushes the Joker so far into the realms of self-seriousness that there’s no going back - the joke’s over.
MORE FOR YOU
Ever since The Dark Knight, the Joker has been presented as some kind of profound commentary on mental illness and societal alienation, as opposed to a melodramatic gangster fighting a billionaire wearing a bat costume. That attitude led us to Jesus Joker, a sure sign that we all need to calm down a bit and let the character be silly again.
I’m not even sure what Snyder is saying about the Joker in this photo; it’s extra confusing when one considers that, in the “Snyderverse,” Superman is depicted as the messiah. So, I suppose Joker is cosplaying as Jesus to show just how dark, twisted, and disrespectful he is, in an act of rebellion sure to scandalize elderly churchgoers and evangelicals.
Well, that’s it. We’ve reached the point of Joker saturation, where irony is dead, satire indistinguishable from official Justice League marketing. Snyder took away our ability to make fun of the Joker, and now the character should probably return to his roots, to the gangster clown we saw in Batman: The Animated Series.
That’s the only version of the character I can take seriously nowadays.
