Funny story, unless you’re the one getting a ticket: Roadshow - East Bay Times

Q: Your column about excuses drivers gave to police when caught speeding made me think of the power cops have when issuing tickets. A young guy with his first sexual experience gets a pass while a woman with breast pain from implants gets nabbed. Glad the cops got a chuckle, but the discretion is troubling.

During COVID-19, I got a ticket for checking my phone at a stoplight at an intersection with no other vehicles. I was stressed about work and checked for messages. When I asked the cop to use his discretion in giving me a ticket for technically violating the law without putting anyone at risk, he just said “sorry” and handed me a ticket.

Thanks for using your discretion, officer.

Julie Rogers, Sunnyvale

A: Hmmm. Mrs. Roadshow had a similar reaction. She asked me not to include another story because she thought it painted a picture of men not getting tickets if they used a sex-related story and excuse with the officer who stopped them.

Q: I read your column on speeding excuses and have a funny one to share. A friend was stopped and cited for doing 40 mph on Westmont Avenue in a 25-mph school zone. The officer mentioned he would be there the next day.

He was and cited her the next day, same time, same spot, for the same offense.

John Roberts, San Jose

A: Funny to you, but I bet not to your friend.

Q: Aren’t we all glad that those two French tourists who thought the speed limit on Highway 101 was 101 mph because of the 101 freeway signs didn’t turn off to Highway 237?

Glenn Grigg

A: Good one. I don’t think their rented Taurus could hit 237.

Q: I recently got a disabled parking placard and now have a question. Can I park where the curb is green? For how long?

Felix Rios, Mountain View

A: Yes. You are entitled to park in short-term green curb spaces for an unlimited time, in spaces designated for residents or merchants, and at metered spaces for free.

Q: I am slightly amazed at the amount of anger regarding driving. Being angry at something you cannot change is futile and accomplishes little.

If you find yourself behind a Road Boulder, take a few deep breaths. Relax, then decide what you want to do. If you encounter a speeder, try not to be in their way. Pray for their health and safety and for those they come in contact with.

Raymond Merrithew, Los Gatos

A: Bottom line is to keep your cool and motor on.
