“That’s the last time I attempt a 3-point turn in the Suez Canal when my wife calls me to tell me that I forgot the shopping list!” the captain of the Ever Given said.
OK, not really. Social media is full of jokes about the costly cock-up in the Suez Canal that has a huge container ship stuck diagonally in the manmade waterway.
The owner of the oddly named Ever Given -- the owner happens to be a company called Evergreen -- told the Financial Times the ship is “suspected to have met with a sudden gust of strong wind, which caused the ship’s body to veer from its course and accidentally run aground.” The massive vessel is stuck in the sand on both sides of the canal.
The Ever Given’s difficulties have all but halted trade between Europe and Asia. Dozens of bulk carriers, crude tankers, vehicle carriers and boxships are stuck in a queue. Some of them have begun to reroute.
The economic consequences of this blockage will be felt everywhere, seeing as some 12% of global trade passes through the Suez Canal. On the plus side, the situation has provided a needed diversion for many people, sitting in front of their computers at home, who’d otherwise be staring down the usual bad news in the world.
Here’s another Twitter joke, referencing Ireland’s health minister Stephen Donnelly, that falls into the category of funny/not funny.
And still another joke:
Want to get in on this? If you’ve been following the Ever Given’s plight and the determined efforts of those working to free it, you now know about things like “suction dredgers,” which might be useful for a laugh.
And if you’re just tuning into the news out of Suez, you shouldn’t feel like you’ve missed your chance to mine comedy gold. The Ever Given might be stuck for days -- or even weeks.
Wherever you are, if you’re connected to the internet, you can track how things are going for the ship by checking out the website Vessel Finder.
