Syracuse, N.Y. -- A coastal storm and some lingering lake effect could drop up to 6 inches of wet snow in Upstate New York Thursday -- which, we note, happens to be April Fool’s Day.
This is no joke, the National Weather Service.
“A developing storm along the coast will have the potential to produce significant accumulating wet snow Wednesday night into Thursday,” the weather service said in issuing a hazardous weather alert for the first days of what is, after all, the cruelest month.
You’ll be excused for not wanting to think about snow today, as a surge of warm southerly air pushes temperatures into the high 60s beneath mostly sunny skies. Lurking behind that warm air, though, is a cold front on track to arrive Wednesday, when temperatures will peak in the mid-50s and rain will develop in the afternoon.
As temperatures fall with that cold front, rain will switch to snow late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. The edge of the coastal storm will slide through Update during the day, and on its way out will haul cold air across the Great Lakes, adding a little lake effect snow to the mix.
By Friday morning, Syracuse could see 4 to 6 inches of slushy snow. The April 1 record is 4.8 inches, set in 1962. The second-highest April 1 total is just 2.2 inches.
You probably won’t have to shovel, though. Thanks to a high pressure system, we’ll enjoy several days of bright sunshine and temperatures in the 50s and 60s starting Saturday. With the strong sun angle of early April, that snow will quickly fade from memory and your driveway.
