George Kestner, a bookkeeper employed at the branch office in Red Bluff of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is reported to be confined to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kestner, on Washington street, as the result of a practical joke in which E. Stetson, local agent for the Union Oil company, and Ora Breese an employee of the company, were the central figures Thursday night.
Early reports indicated that his condition was serious, but the attending physician stated this afternoon that he was improving and barring unforeseen developments in the ease, would recover from the effects of the injuries he received.
It seems that Stetson had a dozen fancy chickens in a shed adjoining the oil company’s plant just north of the city, and that Kestner and Breese conceived the idea of having a little fun at Stetson’s expense. Accordingly they fixed up a plan to take the feathered beauties. They intended to return the chickens to Stetson later.
A third man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was let in on the joke and he tipped the whole plan off to Stetson.
About 8 o’clock in the evening Kestner and Breese went to the oil plant and were on the point of helping themselves to the chickens, when Stetson suddenly appeared on the scene. Both Breese and Kestner took to their heels and ran away at top speed. Kestner, it appears, ran into a barbed wire fence and bumped into a tree so hard that he was dazed.
Kestner was bewildered and unable to tell what had happened when be entered a pool halt on Main street a few minutes later in the evening. He was taken to his home where it was found that his head had been badly bruised.
Kestner still is hazy on the exciting events of the race away from Stetson’s chicken coup and declares he remembers nothing of what transpired after Stetson showed up on the scene.
