The first truly great movie of 2021 has arrived in “The Mitchells vs. The Machines,” a hilarious, maniacal and action-packed cartoon that is truly fun for the whole family.
Animated films have been hitting new heights in recent years and “Mitchells” continues the trend with a bonkers family comedy with a hefty dose of drama. The movie is about the young TikTokers of the world and the older family members trying to understand them and find common ground. It does this with a super fun premise about an average American family taking on the robot apocalypse.
“Mitchells” is funny, heartfelt, full of energy and is streaming now on Netflix.
Katie Mitchell and her father have never quite seen eye-to-eye, with her being a gonzo internet filmmaker and him being a nature-loving technophobe who wouldn’t know a YouTube from a thumb drive. When dad forces the whole family, including mom, son and dopey dog, on a cross-country road trip to take Katie to college, the dysfunction in the whole clan is amplified.
And all of that happens before the robots rise up to take over the world and destroy all humans.
This movie is nuts. And that is largely the point. “Mitchells” is a glorious mix of comedy, family drama and helter-skelter animation. Produced by Sony Pictures, “Mitchells” continues the new style we first saw in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” No longer are animated films bound by the classic Disney look and feel.
I don’t think anything has ever looked or felt like “The Mitchells vs. The Machines”.
That look and feel might be off-putting to some viewers. I’m a Millennial, and even I was a little taken aback at just how vividly and almost forcefully the movie embraces modern, youthful internet memes and gags. It’s quite jarring.
But in the end, the wild animation style is all in service to the plot, because the heart of the film is the story of father and daughter trying to understand one another. If you’re put off by the visual smorgasbord, well so is the father character, so it helps to reinforce the family drama and growth.
Beyond that, “Mitchells” is just plain a fun movie. This average family, all of whom are really unique characters, take on an evil robot uprising in order to save the entire human race. It’s a neat premise and “Mitchells” pushes it to the extreme to find every last joke and more and more exciting action scenes.
This film is a joyous, uproarious ride from start to finish.
