A prominent DJ based in the Valley landed in hot water with the Phoenix Mercury and others on Tuesday for a "joke" he made about the WNBA.
Johnjay Van Es, of the Johnjay and Rich Show, tweeted out "Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics are trying to figure out how to hold events with zero spectators. They're studying how the WNBA does it."
That tweet, which has since been deleted, did not sit well with the Mercury, who replied with this message: "Syndicated radio host based in The Valley chooses to use his platform this way. The 'joke' is uninformed, unfunny and lazy. Maybe drive downtown any summer since 1997 and see for yourself, tough guy."
The team also tweeted out a video of Mercury fans to Van Es, with the message "study this."
When someone replied to Van Es' original tweet with "Your sexism is showing," Van Es responded with "Nope. Not everything has to be controversial. Just a simple funny joke."
Many, including the Mercury, did not think it was "funny."
Van Es later tweeted out an apology on his account and responded to the Mercury's tweet with an apology.
"Let me start by apologizing to anyone that was offended by my earlier Tweet (RE: #TokyoOlympics & #WNBA) - I really am sorry," he tweeted. "Im human enough to admit when Im wrong, given the chance I would love to turn this into a learning opportunity not only for myself but for others as well."
"I already put this on my page, but I wanted to put it here as well. To anyone that was offended by my Tweet, I really am sorry. Im human enough to admit when Im wrong and given the chance I would love to turn this into a learning opportunity," he wrote on one tweet.
"If someone is willing I would love to have a rep from the @PhoenixMercury on my Podcast to discuss Women in Sports. Maybe even set up a time to shoot some free throws for charity? The podcase & charity invites are both open ended, just let me know," he wrote on another.
"I did. It was brought to my attention that they were rude & insensitive so I removed them. I made a mistake and now Im trying my best to make amends and learn from that mistake," he also tweeted.
The Mercury had this response: "We’d love the opportunity to discuss the growth of women’s sports with you, and host you and your family at a game. DM us."
The JohnJay and Rich Show is on 104.7 KISS FM in Phoenix.
