Denver Broncos longtime trainer Steve “Greek” Antonopulos retired Monday after 45 years with the team. Past and current players including Peyton Manning and Von Miller shared their appreciation for Greek on Twitter after the news of his retirement broke.
Broncos coach Vic Fangio also appreciates Antonopulos, but shared his thoughts on the trainer with some lighthearted ribbing.
“I have a hard time believing that Greek is retiring, though,” Fangio said during a Zoom press conference on June 7. “I think he’ll be back. In my mind, like I told him the other day, I don’t think he’s retired yet. I read the quote where he said his wife deserves it and it’s time for him to spend more time with his wife.
“His wife is going to ship him back here pretty damn quick once she gets 24/7 of him. He’ll be welcomed back here at any time. Great, great guy, and obviously, a great trainer. But above that, a great ambassador and a great member of the organization.”
Denver hasn’t announced yet who will replace Antonopulos as the team’s top trainer. Greek was the only individual on staff for all eight of the Broncos’ Super Bowl appearances, and he leaves behind big shoes to fill.
