David Andrews’ one word to describe Bill Belichick is... funny?! - Pats Pulpit

When David Andrews was forced to spend the entire 2019 season on the sidelines following the discovery of blood clots in his lungs last August, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick praised him for staying involved in the operation as a de-facto assistant coach. This did not come as a surprise, though, considering that Andrews is a prototypical “Belichick Guy” — a player who earned his role through a do-your-job mentality.

After arriving in New England as an undrafted free agent in 2015, the Georgia product won the starting center role the following offseason and has never looked back. Along the way, he helped the Patriots win two Super Bowls, was named to the organization’s Team of the 2010s, and was named a captain in 2017 and 2018. The latter role put him in a position to work even closer with the team’s head coach through the weekly captains meetings.

Needless to say that few players know Belichick as well as Andrews does. So when he recently appeared on the Athletes Over Adversity podcast to talk, among other things, about the future Hall of Famer, it was worth closely listening. This is especially true because the 27-year-old spoke about an underrated aspect of Belichick’s business-first persona: his humor.

Andrews was asked to describe Belichick with one word, and he used “funny.”

“You just don’t realize he’s got such a dry sense of humor,” the six-year veteran said. “And he’s so dry and so serious all the time. He just says some funny stuff. Watch some of his press conferences, and sometimes he just says it like he’s mad but he’s being funny. And you have to know how to pick it up. In my rookie year in a meeting he might say something and I’m like ‘Can I laugh at this? Is this okay?’ It’s funny.”

Despite Belichick regularly being portrayed in the media as a notoriously grumpy no-nonsense coach, the sense of humor Andrews mentions does shine through every now and then. The latest instance that was also brought up during the podcast was him and his girlfriend, Linda Holliday, placing their dog, Nike, in front of the computer during a live behind-the-scenes broadcast on draft weekend from their home on Nantucket.

“It’s things like that,” said Andrews. “So, I think he’s funny and I think not a lot of people see that. Watch some of his press conferences or stuff, he does some funny things and people just don’t know if he’s trying to be funny or not. But they don’t know. He’s funny to me, though.”

Andrews, who has been medically cleared to return to the practice fields again following his medical scare, also spoke about some of his teammates. He pointed out that he could name wide receiver Julian Edelman as the funniest player on the team, and instead went with an under-the-radar option by picking linebacker Dont’a Hightower.

“I think Dont’a Hightower is pretty funny, sneakily,” he said about his long-time teammate. “You have to get him out of his shell a little bit, but he’s funny to me.”
