This Indie film mainly follows two characters, Miles (Rafael Casal) and Collin (Daveed Diggs), as they both live their lives in Oakland, California and reckon with their own personal and differing experiences with serious issues like interactions with police and gentrification.
Although the Indie film deals with serious issues and provides social commentary throughout, there are also hilarious moments that cut the tension. There's a fantastic balance of drama and comedy in this film that never allows it to become depressing or defeatist or an overt comedy that isn't grounded in reality.
10 Miles Trying To Sell Flat Irons
Miles attempts to sell some hairstyling supplies he got from Collin's mom to a local salon and tries to smooth talk the owner so he can get some money to send his son to a private school. He jumps up and starts yelling at everyone in the store about how great the flat irons are, claiming they're basically like new, and how he can offer a great price. He has a hilarious exchange with the shop's owner and ends up succeeding.
9 Miles Testing The Flat Irons On Collin
When Miles tries to sell hairstyling supplies to a local salon the owner asks him how she can trust that the flat irons, which look old, even work. The film does a quick cut from the salon to Miles and Collin sitting outside Miles' house as Collin's hair has had the braids taken out and his hair has been straightened. It's a funny little moment that surprisingly allows the plot to continue as Collin has to call Val to help put his braids in.
8 Miles And Collin Freestyling
Miles and Collin freestyle rap throughout most of the film and it's usually a bonding moment between the two where they can let off steam and become even closer. It happens throughout and shows they laugh over the raps they come up with, and it leads to the climactic and serious end scene that makes more sense when freestyle rapping has been established as a theme throughout the film.
7 The Scorpion Bowl Narration
Collin is recognized at his job and the man retells the story of the Scorpion Bowl to his friend and in front of Collin and Val. He narrates the entire story at a fast pace while giving his own commentary and voicing every character that appears, including Collin and Miles.
The narration feels reminiscent of Luis in the Marvel film Ant-Man and is a hilarious predecessor to a serious conclusion and tension between Collin and Val.
6 Selling The Boat
Collin and Miles empty a house and are tasked with throwing away most of the belongings, but Miles feels that he could probably sell the boat so he tries it out. He smooth talks his way into selling the boat and gets a couple hundred dollars that can go to his son's school fund. He talks to the buyer in a certain dialect and Collin when asks what they said Miles says he actually has no idea but does know that people like the bounce and vibe of a conversation so he just went with it.
5 Collin Helping Val Study
Collin goes to Val's place so she can re-do his braids and study at the same time and Collin attempts to help her study for her psych exams. She says that she was inspired by him to come up with slang tricks to remember everything she has to learn. He tries to help her out by coming up with some new slang to have her remember and they have a fun moment joking around together.
4 Green Juice
Collin and Miles go to the local convenience store and are both surprised to see green juice as a new item there. Miles is particularly upset that it's even there because who in the neighborhood would buy it, but both of them are absolutely outraged that it costs $10 a bottle. It's a funny moment that also highlights the larger theme of gentrification.
3 Mugasaurus
Miles and Collin go to Collin's mother's house to check-in with her and Collin faces off against her husband's son. The young boy is drinking out of a handmade dinosaur mug and Miles asks Collin if he's just going to let that happen.
The boy isn't fazed by this and Collin hilariously refers to the mug he presumably made when he was younger as "mugasaurus" a mug and a dinosaur combined.
2 Sharing A Tattoo
Miles and Collin decide to go to a house party at their friend's house and Miles tries to convince Collin that everything will be fine because it's in the techie gentrified area and nothing will happen out there. They meet the host of the party, the CEO of a tech company that just moved to Oakland, and he tries to bond with Miles over their Oakland neck tattoos. Collin laughs at him because he and the audience know that Miles is livid.
1 Baby Shirt
Miles' son gets him a present and Miles goes to try on the shirt with Collin and Ashley watching and making fun of him. He says it's way too small and compares it to a baby shirt and the two poke fun at him but eventually, Ashley says that she likes it and it fits perfectly. Again, it's another hilarious and light moment right before a serious and potentially devastating moment.
