I will admit that I still read the comics in The Reporter. Well, some of them, not Six Chix. It grates on me — typically addressing social issues of the day in a rather hackneyed, leftist/feminist manner. Which is OK. I support feminism and have been surrounded by strong and capable women my entire life. Thank goodness. And I respect free speech and the political thoughts of others.
I just pass over this one on my way to Bizarro, Pearls Before Swine etc. Not my thing. But it caught my eye when I saw the apology where usually would be found the day’s offering from Six Chix. Not having seen the “offensive” cartoon of Tuesday July 28, I immediately went to the recycle bin to retrieve it, wondering “What the heck could they have possibly done to provoke this?!”
And there it was. And the more I thought of it, the swift and vehement cancellation, the more amused I became. For in your rush to fulfill the cancel culture your editors clearly missed the nuance of the cartoon. It was meant to depict, in a pretty much self-righteous and snarky fashion, an unsophisticated and potentially bigoted white woman being ignorant and insensitive. But you clearly failed to see that. You seem to have seen it as a slap at both mask wearing and BLM. And you tripped all over yourselves trying to be prompt in your cancellation. Because silence is violence. Hysterical. So I am left chuckling at this chain of events, and I wonder if, after you recognize the true, intended message of the cartoon, will you walk back your fierce denunciation? This cancel culture really has taken legs, hasn’t it? What a laugh.
