Cook County, MN-- The Cook County School District is investigating after recent morning announcements sparked outrage from parents.

Assistant Principal Mitch Dorr hosts the announcements daily on YouTube.

On Thursday, January 14, parents spotted a Gadsden flag in the background, with the words "don't let the mask become a muzzle" at the bottom.

The traditional flag says "don't tread on me". It dates back to the Revolutionary War.

In recent years, far-right extremist groups and white supremacists started using the Gadsden flag as a symbol.

Rioters were also seen carrying the flag during the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

Dorr said in an apology message that the flag was a joke.

The former history teacher claimed he didn't realize the present-day context until parents complained to the district.

"I totally apologize to anybody who took that wrong, that flag wrong. I know that it's got more negative connotation in today's era," said Dorr.

Dorr went on to say he was stunned by the blow-back from parents.

He said he believes in celebrating everyone and wants to lift up all his students.

In a letter to parents,Cook County Acting Superintendent Megan Myers said she understood why the incident caused concern and discomfort.

She said the district is conducting an independent investigation.
